When I first started driving, one of my first dispatches was up to the northeast. I hadn't been in the truck long enough to have a cash advance available on my fuel card, and having JUST finished training, I was still pretty broke. In other words, I had no money for the tolls. So, I started looking at the map for an alternate route, and saw that US1 was a "free" road, not all that far out-of-route, and would accomplish what I needed to do. It even had a scale located on it, so I figured it HAD to be a legal truck route. After all, why would they build a permanent scale on a road trucks weren't allowed to drive on?
The trip up was uneventful...the scale was closed, and so I didn't think twice about returning along the same route. This time, though, they were open. They wrote me a $120 ticket for being overwidth and said they were being nice by not writing the overlength ticket....would have been $540 back then. They sent me up this curvy little road to get back to the interstate (Hwy 1 was a LOT more truck-friendly)...but luckily it was already south of the tolls.
That was the day I truly discovered the front part of the motor carrier atlas....it had been mentioned a time or two in training, and even glanced over, but never REALLY studied. It cost me $120....still probably cheaper than the tolls were, and I had a couple months to come up with it. -

We handle many types of trailers, including those that are 96" wide, tankers. I break their chops by going that way as often as I can. It is nothing short of a corrupt scam.
