Last week I was in Maryland and rather than backtracking to get down to 95 I headed west on Hwy 1. I got pulled in for inspection just over the Conowingo Bridge and ticketed for being on a restricted route with a truck over 48'. The fine is $1010 which just blew my mind! There were no signs and I had no idea that I was on a road with a length limit. Of course ignorance of the law doesn't get me anywhere, it just irritates me that these states makes these laws and then basically hide them.

I talked to a lawyer in Maryland and he said that he talked to one driver that had gotten a ticket for the same thing and he just paid the ticket. A few days later he got a letter from the courthouse saying that by paying the fine he had admitted that he knew about the law and knowingly drove on the road anyway. Because he admitted guilt his license was being revoked for one year.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of someone losing their license after paying a fine like this. Hiring a lawyer will cost me nearly as much as the fine and I have to get my butt from Utah to Maryland for court which will cost another chunk of change. I don't really trust lawyers so I'm not sure if this story of the driver losing his license is true. He might just be telling me that so he can get some of my money. Paying the fine is irritating but I'm more worried about the possibility of losing my license.

If anyone has any experience with this please let me know.

I got the same ticket, paid the fine and that was the end of it. A weigh station on a restricted route, how convenient.

Not really sure on the law or how all that would work but if you are a OOIDA member they a outfit called roadlaw that can pretty much tell you what they can do about a fine and also have lawyers that know the laws in the towns and would keep you from having to show up. They have done good for me in the past but has been many years since I have had to use them.

Yeah, a very convenient coincidence. There were several trucks pulled over getting the same ticket when they got me.

I'm curious, what was the amount of your fine??

    Thanks

I always feel like I have a target on my back when I pull 1 of our 53s into Maryland.

Going the route allowed isn't always even the least amount of access roads, but they break it into 2 pieces. The STAA routes are about impassable at times during the day, especially near Baltimore and DC.

Some ideas expressed here, and I'm sorry about you having to deal with this. Good luck with it.

I haven't been over that bridge in years. Actually it's a dam. I grew up near there and crossed the Conowingo many times. I remember as a kid it was a super narrow bridge. I can imagine in a truck being a mirror smacker if they allowed truck traffic.

What you should of done is turned left right before the bridge on 222 takes you right over to Perryville, MD by that truck stop and get on I-95 there.

That ticket will have no effect on your license but I think it will on CSA2010.

This is a large file like 53 MB. It's the Maryland gov't truckers restricted route pdf map and lists the Conowingo Dam restriction.
    http://apps.roads.maryland.gov/shaservices/mapsbrochures/maps/oppe/trucker_front.pdf

This is a simpler smaller file written out

But I agree with you their restricted routes are not well marked or published. Not all truckers have access to a computer. Basically they want trucks not to wonder a 1/2 mile off interstates and US routes unless they are delivering or picking up. The Conowingo Dam is an exception to US routes. Anyone coming from the Lancaster, PA area follow Rt. 222 back to I-95 in Perryville, MD. At least that's the way I always ran to go see my mother and never got in trouble.

I think a good lawyer could put up a fight as they do allow up to 48' trailers on that dam yet it is not marked they don't want 53 footers or trucks period. The state is at neglect publishing it. So every trucker is to download all state maps because that is suppose to be the most looked at resource? I would also contact Rand McNally and correct them.

I don't think your license can be suspended by Maryland if you live in another state as this is not a point getter. It doesn't affect your MVR but your CSA2010 score.

Here's some reads on MD CDL suspensions.

    http://www.trafficviolationlawfirms.com/resources/traffic-tickets/commercial-license/maryland-cdl-traffic-violations-commercial-

    From the MD CDL manual

But I read the MD CDL manual and they have a list of disqualifications and being on a restricted route is not one of them. That just sounds like a poor attorney to me.

The conawingo dam is restricted for 53's and 102's. the sign is there but not until you drop down onto it. They have a marked truck route, turn left onto 222 like was said puts u on 95 at exit 93. Or u can wait till after 5pm and go across the dam. Coup closes early.
