Hi everyone! We are DJ N TJ, future husband/wife team drivers for an undetermined starter company. I (TJ) will be going to school soon to get my CDL, my husband already has his. We read a lot on this forum to get more insight into the industry and the current vibe of truckers. We've seen some great advise but thought it was time for us to join in.

Our first question is: How are the new HOS (34 hr reset) affecting teams?

Our second question is: What do you find is most beneficial to teams - running about 9 hrs/day or 11 hrs/day?

Thanks for all of your input!

the new 34 is going to suck big time for teams... my wife drivers days so no change for her BUT I driver nights so my 34 will be more like 45-50hr's, that's 1 load less a week we will be able to run..

as to how long to run a day, it will be up to you both and the requirement of the load. some loads have enough time you can both run 9hr's a day and be on time others will require you both to run over 10... we did fedex for 2 years (drop and hook/turn and burn) 6708 miles a week in 6 day, we both would needed to run 10.5-11 hr's every day then would do a rolling reset (can't do it that way with the new HOS)

No mention made in rules of differences for teams, so you will have to show 1/2 hour off duty before driving past 8 hours on duty.

I would say the new rules are more complicated for teams to adapt to.

Especially for the driver who runs at night.

As to your 1st question; The new rules just plain suck! But, they are what they are and there is two ways to tackle them; 1)Park the truck between the 07:00-24:00 for the required 34 hrs, OR 2)Don't do a restart.

This brings me to your 2nd question; You can run an average of 8.75 hrs each day/shift and you will never have to do a restart.

I really wish more drivers had spoken up about these new rules before they went into place. None of these new rules will make anyone safer. Wish you and your "future" husband the best...

I don't see the 30min break as that big a deal... almost everyone stops for a 15min break anyway (bathroom/smack) just need to add 15min to it, I drive nights and I can always find a place to stop for a nap.... if needed

Thanks flood. We were trying to think this part of it through...We are thinking about 7am-7pm/7pm -7am driving shifts, each driving 9 hrs or more as needed during those shifts. If I drive days and start my 34 reset before my husband and then he starts his later in the day (say midnight), I can start the driving before him - he would be then able to start driving during his normal shift hours. This would then keep our truck at only 34 hours sitting still.

Does that make sense? Or is this a lot more difficult than we're thinking? DOT can make the rules so freakin confusing. We just want to understand how these changes will affect our ability to earn BEFORE we get going.

it's all about timing.... if driver A does the 7am/7pm the reset would let you drive after 0500am the 2nd day (2 0100-0500) driver B 7pm/7am if he stops BEFORE 0100 then its a 34hr. BUT if he stops after 0100 the 1day doesn't count...... in the real world you will have loads pu/del between 0100-0500

Thanks for your well wishes. My husband and I are excited about getting out on the road. Of course, rules will come and go...we'll just have to work our way around/through them.
