Indiana Bridge Law - Tandem Distance from Kingpin

    Hey I'm a flatbedder that's recently become a reefer(er) or whatever. :)

    Anyway, need some clarification on tandem distance from kingpin for bridge laws. I understand Indiana is 43' from kingpin, now my question is, is it 43' to the rearmost axle on the tandems, or to the middle between the two axles on the tandem? (Never had to worry about this before pulling spreads.)

    I don't find any length restriction for IN, Minnesota is 43 kingpin to center of rear axle group, and Vermont is 43 kingpin to rearmost axle. ("group" I would assume means both axles, or tandem...so center of it). Michigan same as Minnesota, and Maine is 53 foot trailer kingpin to center of rearmost trailer axle 43' may operate on designated routes only.

    Those are the only references to your "43 foot" reference.

    Ok, so does that mean that I can have the tandems slide all the way back as long as I am legal weight if there is no distance law?

    I found this on the Indiana Code, would this only apply to state highways?

    IC 9-20-13-4
    Semitrailers in excess of 48 feet, 6 inches; restrictions on operation
    Sec. 4. Notwithstanding section 2 of this chapter, a semitrailer longer than forty-eight (48) feet, six (6) inches, may be operated on a highway designated as part of the state highway system under IC 8-23-4 only if the distance between the kingpin and the rearmost axle of the semitrailer is not more than:
    (1) forty-six (46) feet, if the semitrailer is used exclusively or primarily in connection with motorsports; or
    (2) for all other semitrailers, forty-three (43) feet.

    pick up yourself an atlas. then you have access to that information.

    there are 13 states that i made a list of with kingpin requirements for my 53 flat. there are others that have 43 feet to center of rear axle group. my rear axle only has 2 positions. front at 40 feet and rear at 46 feet. so i assume i'd be ok to rum spread in those states. haven't got much east coast under my belt yet. hoping to get that this month.

    the atlas has nothing listed for indiana.

    i wonder if michigan is a stickler for kingpin. being as how every trailer in that state is covered in axles. i'd hate to see the maintanace bill at the end of the year.

    Yeah I have an atlas brother. It doesn't list anything so I guess I"m good.

    just make sure the rest of the states you'll be running through are also good.

    i'm not looking forward to loads that i have to run through tennessee and south carolina. to get to the other side and deliver.

    What you posted is for state and local highways...and the way I read it, center of the rear axle to center of kingpin no more than 43'. So actually setting for the (standard to me CA settings) center of the forward axle (tandem) at 40'. the easy way to measure is 10' from rear of trailer to center of forward axle.....you won't need anything longer than a 12-15 foot tape measure.

    If Im only using I-69 and a few local roads I wouldnt have to worry about it though?

    We don't care about our roads. Just look how many scalehouses are on on of the busiest interstates (I65) in the country....zero. Seymour has been closed for a long time. Are there any on I69 yet?
