Just a heads up for you Texas CDL holders. Texas needs to have a front copy of your medical card by Jan 31, 2014. Otherwise your licenses will be down graded to a Class C automatically. You will lose your endorsements, including your hazmat.
I was not aware of the Jan 31 deadline, since they never mailed me any notice. A friend called and told me this past friday afternoon. I drove down to DMV and glad I did.

CondoCruiser Thanks this.

Yes and I would follow through too and call them. It took the DPS in Austin 2 months to put my card on file from the time I emailed it in. Don't assume it's been done just because you've emailed or faxed it to them.
Good luckCondoCruiser Thanks this. -
Even though you have faxed or emailed your medical information to the state, you ought to follow up to make sure they have it entered into your CDL record.
Some states are already downgrading CDL's.CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
Then many are relying on their employer to do it because they gave them their physical and are holding the hard copies of the form.
Drivers DO NOT rely on your employer. It's your CDL and your responsibility. Take care of it yourself and double check with the state DMV to be sure. It only takes a follow up phone call. Too many employers say they will do it, get sidetracked and forget. You can't hold them responsible because it isn't their job to do it for you.
If you are one with an address on your CDL that doesn't match where you stay you will not know about any letters sent. I've seen some of them posts. It is your responsibility to update your address within 30 days. -
Is anyone the least bit surprised by this? Look at how well the Affordable Care Act rolled out. The government trying to change things is usually an epic fail.
DDC and WorldofTransportation Thank this. -

Personally, I don't think the DMV DPS or other agencies are geared up for this. I think they're clueless about this process. I get a phone call and a voicemail telling me my latest med card is now on file. Gee thanks. But how about in writing? I shall be calling them again. Not letting them off the hook with this

The DOT came up with this plan three years ago and each state has been in charge of putting a system in place to ensure they are compliant. But it's up to each driver to ensure the information is on file and I would suggest a personal visit to your local DMV with a copy of your long form Med sheet to be sure all is well.

That's all well and good but I asked the DPS in Austin if I could come down personally to take care of business. They said no, because everything is done via a PO box, fax or email. Yes you could spin your wheels and go down, but it maybe a futile excercise. I'm only quoting what the gal told me over the phone. Maybe you will have better luck.
Im very nervous about this whole process. I'm afraid I don't trust any of these agencies.
