There is another possible solution to the "overtime" solution.

Totally do away with mileage pay and pay the OTR truck driver by the hour, based on a 98 hour work week, (14 hours a day X 7 days a week = 98 hours).

The starting pay would be the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour plus time and 1/2 after 40 hours, ($7.25 an hour X 1.5 = $10.875 an hour).

    1) $7.25 an hour X 40 hours = $290.00

    2) $10.875 an hour X 58 hours = $630.75

    3) Total for the week would be $920.75

If the federal minimum wage does go up to $10.10 an hour, that would $404 for 40 hours. Anything over 40 hours would then be $15.15 an hour, ($10.10 X 1.5 = $15.15).

This way the OTR truck driver can count on having money coming his or her way on a continual basis.

How about not hauling cheap freight and drivers getting paid a fair wage in the first place would be a quicker and easier solution, but again trucking is the only industry where one is expected to work for free

Confused as to why you would use a 98 hr. work week when with the new reset rules you can not get in more than 70?

Using your pay example would be great, it would SAVE me money as my drivers are already over that threshold just on mileage pay, by quite a bit, careful what you wish for!

Never heard of that proposed law. Want to site some reference?

Drivers at the mega-crap only average 1700 a week anyway. As I see it the mega-crap will just plan up to 1400 miles as to avoid paying any more. The overhead costs them little and a driver with hours is more of an asset then anything else in this business. The job would suck even more with lower pay and more layover time!

We need to get paid by the hour. With truck tracking, cameras, cell phones, and ebor there is no more excuse these companies have in not being able to manage a drivers time. Most of these companies are over the top micro-managers as it is.

If I was payed by the hour it'd cut my pay. Percentage is the best way. No company is going to haul cheap enough freight that you can't love on percentage. I won't drive for somebody that only pays miles, even if it's hub miles.

i am amazed at how so many folks who can't stand the government regulating them to death, want government to "come to their rescue" because they are stupid enough to volunteer for job that they knew what the pay was, what goes on regarding delays, harassment, etc and think that the pay is too low. This is a volunteer job, no one is forced to drive a truck, and the pay reflects that. The pay will adjust to a level that keeps a certain percentage of truck seats full. And it doesn't help that the economy, in general, is not paying much better than it is to provide some leverage to raise driver compensation. And when you seek the government to come to your rescue, you also get all the baggage of government breathing down your neck. You have to pay the piper if you want to dance to the tune.

I look at it this way. If you are qualified to work somewhere else that pays more, then why aren't you? If you are not, then what job out there is going to pay more than driving, with the qualifications you have, and then why aren't you applying for those jobs? Why anyone would want to pretty much give up any social life, miss out on family events, stay cooped up in a truck for days on end for lower pay, deal with the traffic for hours on end, etc if they can get better pay somewhere else? Instead they holler about how much they are not compensated. Quit wasting energy bellyaching and put it towards finding something that pays better. After all, this line of work is all volunteer. No one grabbed anyone by their genitalia and forced them to get a CDL and get behind the wheel. I realize we are trying to act like the former Soviet Union, which would tell citizens what job they would do, but we haven't reached that point yet. And there are many jobs that people like to do that they do not get paid well, or even at all, to do. Just because you like a job does not mean that someone is willing to pay much for you to do it. The goal, and not many reach it, is to do the job you love best and make a sweet income doing it. It is disingenuous to do the job you like and FORCE someone to pay you what you think you are worth. If what you do is important enough, they will pay what it is worth without the government sticking their neck into it.
