The 34-hr restart was one of the best things to happen to truckers in years. Why? Because a LOT of trucking companies started getting drivers home on the weekends so they could get a 34-hr restart. Now, what incentive do they have to get drivers home and give them a break? None. The trucking companies will be better off, without a 34-hr restart rule in effect, keeping the drivers on the road and working them all the time. Just another slap in the trucker's face.

i started driving in 2004 and they've already changed it all around once- now they're going to change it again... stupidity -
On the day this latest, possible change was announced, I signed on to drive for a private manufacturing company, on salary.
I'd be happy if they changed it to 8 hours on, and 16 hours off. Well, not really. It would take longer to turn a trip that way. This is the first time I've ever trucked and not been paid for production. Gonna' be weird, but HOS won't matter as much to me anymore, I don't think. -
I started with the 10 driving, 8 off and 15 hrs total work time. Its changed 3 times since then. The old rules worked for 60 yrs, why do they keep changing them around every yr or two now?????????????????????????? Stupid gooberment any way.
I am beginning to believe another driver that told me they change it every so often to throw the drivers off, and then the DOT makes money off the fines. Once every body starts to get a handle on it their revenue drops. -
I am reserving judgment until I see what the new rules bring. The OOIDA is working as best they can to make an influence on the new rules, so I am hopeful that we have so good representation there.
The 34 hour rule will go away, but that doesn't mean a restart is going away completely. 34 hours was to factor in two sleep cycles, meaning two 10 hour breaks. With the new rules, it could possibly change to 48 hours, which still isn't bad, compared to not having a restart at all.
As for the 11 hour driving rule, I have personal reasons for liking this rule, mainly because we sometimes run non-stop from Atlanta to Fort Worth. We are not force to run non-stop, but 11 hours allows me to get into the DFW area without taking a break, and gives me an extra day of home time and good rest. If it drops back down to 10, I am forced to stay out an extra day on my backhaul, that or try to sneak home.
Everything at this point is speculation though. We know there are new rules coming, but we wont know for over a month exactly what they will be. -
I used to use it exactly as you say though, and it made more sense. But now it makes it so you look over 11 and 14 and those are huge violations. -
Could you explain how you do that? I don't mind the long explanation or for that matter, even a powerpoint presentation? -

I am confussed in why they said you can't. The time before the 8 & after the 8 does not total more than 11 hours driving. Now had I done this
10 hour break to start with
6 hours driving
8 hours sleeper
6 hours driving
2 hour break
The time before the 8 and after the 8 (before the 2nd break was completed) totaled more than 11 hours driving.
Now prior to 10-1-05 the breaks had to be completed in the sleeper (so if you was home for 34 hours, you could have a violaton because you was split breaking prior and needed to finish in the sleeper THEY DID WITHOUT THAT SO DON'T GET CONFUSED).
I swear in the above example you was fine???? Am I missing something "anyone". I do mess up allot!
