New law about passengers in trucks?

    I've been wanting to ride with my dad but he's been holding it off with excuse after excuse. Recently, my sister told me that I couldn't ride with him because of a new law stating that passengers in an 18 wheeler must be 18 or older, with me being 16. At first, I thought it was BS, but now I'm having my doubts. Part of me believes my dad just doesn't want me in his new, shiny Peterbilt 386, and the other half is saying that this law is real.

    So my question is, is it????? I've searched everywhere for it and could never find it. With me visiting this forum daily, I know you awesome drivers have the answer! It means alot to me, because my childhood was growing up in a 2000 Freightliner Classic XL.

    There is no law as you stated. However, his insurance may have set limits as to the age of rider's. Or maybe his employer has set the age limit.
    My company used to let children as young as 8 ride along. Now it is 12. Insurance companies pretty much run this business now.

    I'm not sure..but i believe passenger in 18 wheeler is supposed to be a fellow trucker who might be a team member. i could be wrong though.

    You are, wrong that is.

    Age is determined by company policy, and blamed on insurance. The company has to authorize passengers, has nothing to do with age.

    It's Summertime and school is out. I see kids riding in rigs daily. This is a company thing, not a legal thing.

    What excuses is your dad giving you?How long is he gone before home time?If a month or so maybe he doesn't think you would wanna stay out that long?I have not heard of any law that you must be 18 yrs of age.It's the companies policy how old the passenger has to be and how long the driver is with the company before he's eligible to have riders..But your dad I think would have to pay for riders insurance which maybe he does not have.I would ask him.

    Most companies and insurance companies have rules regarding passengers .

    some drivers might find a passenger a distraction

    Well to be honest, he hasn't been giving me any excuses. He just says he's on his way when in actuality, he's not. He's also an OTR driver, coming from being a regional driver at Atlantic Intermodal Services in Savannah, GA, so I'd say about a month's time.

    @All: What you're saying about company policy is making sense. Thank you guys for the help. I learn something new about trucking every day here.
