My first thought on the OP post was that the drivers could easily be doing the 8 and 2 split. I do it occasionally myself with e-logs. Nice thing about using e-logs to do it, you can't screw it up. Always a risk on paper of that because is all the 8 and 11 and 14 rules. The e-log keeps things nice and tidy. Not perfect solution of everyone, for sure, and they should not be mandated, but just because someone doesn't sit out a full 10 doesn't mean they are rigging the system.

It's funny when I hear about e-logs, and how stringent the rules have become, I can't help but reflect how different the times are. When I started in the '70's, I would fold a paper log book in half, and slam it in the door, to keep the door from rattling. Every week or 2, my boss would say, "You know, we haven't got a log from you in a while, could you scratch some lines, and hand it in?" Even at scales, I never remember being asked for a logbook, but the scalemasters then were usually soon-to-be retired state troopers, and couldn't care less about your logs, only weight. Ah, the good ol' days.

without HOS restrictions I have no doubt the company I drive for would completely disregard my need for sleeping, eating and using the restroom to increase their bottom line.

Never used e logs. I've talked to a lot who have and they all say there are lots of ways to cheat them.

It's easy to make a paper log look legal. It's easy to make an e log look legal.

Neither, when falsified, will stand up to real scrutiny if it ever comes down to it.

The Walmart dude showed how e logs are useless in ensuring the most important rule is followed, not driving while fatigued.

I don't think E logs will do anything to increase safety but will help a bit with compliance.

They're good for the companies that sell them and that's about all.

Dude no where has E logs been put into practice to stop fatigued driving. Since you can get fatigued any time. It all about the abuse of the rules and running 1,000 mile days and doing 20 minute restarts, and littering the highway with ripped up loose leaf logs for those who might have some guy go through the trash to find incriminating evidence. I do plead the 5th. Uhh I might of heard those things from a friend of a friend's 3rd half cousin somewhere between Memphis and Little Rock. I rest my case.

Elogs rock and since you don't know why people leave b4 you stop assuming they are cheating. I do 8 and 2 splits so I don't have to do those 30 minute breaks when I'm on a tight load. So maybe that's what those guys are doing. Truly in these days falsifying your logs aren't worth the consequences when caught.

It sure isn't fatigued driving ;) If it were I'm sure they would have to put. Not to eat any heavy meals during your driving time. Not to run between the hours of 3am and 6am. It REGULATIONS, AND if you want to ask me more questions you are going to have to stop hijacking my dude's thread. Consider this a warning Mr. Tiny Tim grrrrrrrrr ;)

The intent of the HOS rules is to reduce accidents due to tired drivers screwing the pooch.
    At least on the surface.

E-logging is easy, easy. Log in and drive. no muss, no fuss.
Drive legal and there is no problem.
But lots of drivers cannot do this, they just have to play games...
