I am an OTR driver. Drive at night as well as during the day and stay on the road months at a time. As if parking wasn't a problem already, the new HOS came to make it more difficult to find a place to take the mandatory breaks... Since the implementation of the new HOS, I have seen more trucks parked everywhere, at ramps, rest areas, truck stops and even on the shoulders of highways...
Now we are forced to park more often but find less places to park... Closed rest areas, truck stops filling up earlier than before and charging for parking spots that used to be free...
I have to do a lot of planning so that I don't run out of hrs or get a violation trying to find a safe place to park... specially when I run all night.
Would like to know from you drivers how the new HOS are affecting you when it is time to find truck parking.

I bend over backwards to trip plan for night driving to make it easier to find a spot to park at the end of my shift. True, it can be a hassle finding a spot in the middle of the shift, but there's generally less fuss if you are clogging up a fuel island for 30 minutes at 1am than there would be at 1pm.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Plan your day. Then you'll have parking.

I didn't notice a big change myself.

I use closed scales sometimes for the 30 min drool period.

Walmart anyone? Hell I park at customer locations most of the time... Just call in advance and ask about parking unless you already know for sure if they have and allow drivers to take their break...
Another tool is this smartphone app, truckerpath. Very easy to use and will save your ### again and again. It is a lifesaver, android and iOS free app download, no BS

I think the OP is being a bit over dramatic. I have yet to not be able to find somewhere to park for breaks. It may not always be an ideal location or my first choice of spots, but I can always find a spot somewhere.

One night I was out on Long Island, NY... I actually parked in a kohl's department store parking lot in Jericho, NY... No one said a word to me about it... I just parked in the front lot as far from the store as I could...
