More Restrictions are NEEDED

i can't figure it out.

the people have been driving with passengers since the beginning of time. there's always been someone to talk to. yet, bring on the phone and it's a distraction. not even bluetooth cured the problem.

so what's the difference between a passenger in your ear or your phone call in your ear?

 

"The NTSB recommends the FMCSA modify 49 CFR 392.82 and prohibit the use of hands-free cell phone use by a CDL holder while the driver is operating a commercial vehicle, except in emergencies."


So now that they have convinced all the drivers to go out and buy the bluetooth headsets for talking on the phone while driving ... you can't use them. How the hell did trucking ever function before we started making all these asinine rules??? JUST LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have cars that are now mobile hotspots xD

 

They are only after the money the fines would generate. It isn't about safety at all. If it were, technology could completely solve the problem. It would be pretty easy for cell phone companies to program phones so they won't work if the GPS in them detects motion over a certain speed. Or just program them so they can't change towers. One or the other would greatly curtail use while driving. Yea, they'd tick off a passenger trying to use one. But if it was really about safety, that would be a small price to pay.

 

I would first like to see the US DOT come up with rules for passenger cars to limit the distractions within them. I see a lot of problems and a bunch of accidents with people not paying attention to the road and fiddling with the car display. The other day I witnessed two accidents, the first one was on the way to work where a car was disabled on the side of the road sticking out about a foot or two and a guy ran into the back of it because he wasn't watching the road. BUT the other one was a girl rear ended a county work truck because she was trying to send a message from her new Ford she got two days before. Ford, like GM and it seems everyone else wants to sell these mobile hotspots so the drivers can kill themselves. I've said this before, if we are to abide by some stupid law to prevent us from Texting, then maybe it is time for the government to tell the carriers that they can't offer texting any more.

 

I see dozens of car drivers everyday on there cell phone. They are clearly distracted. Car after car, drivers have cell phones in their hands. My bet is that many truckers do too. I know several who are checking there phone for texts and GPS constantly. Sorry, but I don't trust you to be able to be on a device and drive a cmv. Not with the way the public also drives around cmv's. Why is it illegal for a cmv to not use a handheld in the first place? Same reason your gonna lose the headset.

 

I read about a study awhile back that determined when we talk on the phone or type a text or email we mentally visualize that person's face, even if we have never seen their face, as well as their reaction to what you're "saying". The distraction is mental and not what we are doing physically, e. g., typing. Think about it next time you talk to someone on the phone. I found it a bit weird but very true.

I dont imagine it will be long before some of these bigger carriers install the same thing that they have in locomotives now, a device that detects when a cell phone is on in the cab and the location and speed of the train. Doesnt even have to be in use,just on. It sends the data back to whatever the desired address is, usually a road manager with the number of the phone it detected. Cell phones are completely prohibited now on RR. Probably be the same with us before long.
