When I started with Melton we were doing load securement training. One of the guys was pulling back on a snap binder with the winch bar on it cept he didn't quite get it closed when he left go of the bar. That thing flew across the room and stuck in the wall. The guy doing the training came over and said, "That, boys and girls, is why we don't stand in front of the bar when we are securing a binder." Needless to say, that stuck.

I've seen guys ruin freight with ratchet binders too though. Kind of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. One guy at a company I worked for would hand tighten the ratchets down, then proceed to get out his ratchet bar and continue to tighten it down until he couldn't get it to go anymore. When our boss, Derek, saw that he suddenly knew who was tearing all the pockets out of the trailers and fired his butt.

ROFL!!! That's why my company won't hand out ratchet binders. Sometimes dropping a pre-loaded trailer i have to leave a ratchet binder or two on because i don't have enough snap binders and I always leave explicit instructions on how to properly use a ratchet binder on the drop sheet.
