If you cross state lines, you will need a US DOT number. There is no charge for the number. However, you may need motor carrier authority to do business interstate. That will cost you $300 for the filing fee. You can do both online, yourself. There should not have been a charge for a FEIN number. I have had several corporations and NEVER paid a fee to get an employer identification number. If I were you, I would contact my state IRP office and ask them what you will need.

Do you need your own operating authority to get apportioned tag and register for IRP in Maryland if you lease your truck on with a carrier and truck is operated under their authority? IFTA is reported by carrier.

You must have motor carrier to have an IRP account. If you lease to a carrier, you can still have your own base plate, but you will need permission from the carrier to whom you are leasing and the state may also require a copy of the lease. There is a form the carrier will need to sign for them. You can also have your own IFTA account. However, most carriers want you to run both through them. I have a friend who has always leased to another carrier rather than getting his own authority. He has always gotten his own apportioned plate and IFTA account.

    Tjackson4 Thanks this.

I don't know if they check to see if you are still with the same carrier or not. They will check to make sure the UCR and 2290 has been paid. They may also request a copy of your insurance certificate. If you leave the carrier and go to another one, you will need to notify your IRP office so they can change your cab card. It is possible that your carrier could notify the state that you are no longer with them. That would be a good question to ask your IRP office.

What? You can buy your own tag, regardless. You can even report your own IFTA.

Your own authority means you're totally responsible for every ###### thing. Rules, regulations, paperwork, trucks, taxes and drivers. You might want to research a bit more.

Trucks are currently leased to carrier, under their authority(I own trucks). I am interested in getting my own plates but still lease trucks as contractor.

Some carriers will not allow owner operators who lease to them to have their own IFTA or IRP accounts. They must give you permission in writing in order to set up either account. If the carrier doesn't want you to have your own accounts, then you will need to find another carrier or get your own authority.
