I have a question for a friend thats looking to get in to the truck driving industry.
I've read through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pocketboot but even their own rules and regulations aren't very specific on requirements and disqualifications when it comes to the Health Safety Standard part for the driver.
My friend was born with a heart condition known as a triatologyaflow and he's had 3 surgeries. His last one was way back in before 2005 and he was born 04/10/1988 and he graduated highschool 2007 and he's 26 now. So its been quite a few years since he's had surgery and everything is okay other then he has to be regulated every year. They mention he might need other surgeries in the future but they don't know when. Its also mandatory that he stays healthy and he does go to the gym and walks/runs 3miles, does 200 push ups and sit ups, pull ups and lifts weights.
Would his pre-existing condition disqualify him from getting a license and a DOT Medical Card?

Tell him to get a DOT physical and he will know. They're pretty cheap running anywhere from $75.00 - $140.00
Get the physical from a doctor that's registered with the federal government to do DOT physicals, otherwise the physical isn't recognized.ZVER410 Thanks this. -
Remember that if you can pass a DOT physical, you might also have to pass a company physical, which may have different qualifications.

Also how would I know if the place or doctor is registered by the federal government?
Could my friend possibly just keep his whole condition to himself and not mention anything and still get through? How often do they use stethoscopes to listen to the heart if at all through the physical? What all is performed through the physical for qualifying or disqualifying?
When did you have your last physical? -
I know companies can have their own rules and regulations aside from the quote minimum standards by the state.
How strict can states or companies get? -

I don't know if this helps, but I had open heart surgery in 1995. My meds reflect the fact that I have heart problems. I must produce a stress test result at every DOT physical. Any and all documentation you have will be helpful at you physical. I also cannot pass the hearing whisper test, so I went to a ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, and had my hearing checked by a professional. I passed the hearing test, and took that paper work to my DOT physical, and did not have to do that stupid whisper test.

Yeah I know when reading through the Safety Motor Carrier Regulations Pocketbook there is something like some sort of exemption truck drives can have and still be able to drive? They just don't have to go through all those ridiculous test and they just get signed off. Is that how that exemption thing works?
What would qualify you to get that and what would you have to do in order to get that and do that every time you had to get a physical? -
Yes I am still out there. Some exemptions must be approved by the FMCSA. In my case the paperwork I provided just states that I have exceeded the minimal requirements
