I was recently diagnosed with adult onset muscular dystophy affecting both lower and upper body/neck.(diagnosis is not 100 percent yet, just waiting for confirmation, but I failed certain tests and doctor told me I have a muscle disease, just not 100 percent on the type of ms...there's a lot of different types) I've been having problems for a while and only drive part time less than 15 hours a week with very short local trips with an automatic transmission and I can go at my own pace(not rushing/can take breaks and lie down). My body could never handle long drives due to pain and having my feet pushing pedals constantly. Can't do heavy lifting/can't stand for long periods of time/can't walk for long distances/have trouble with stocking shelves/overhead arms moveming ect. and I'm very young. This has been going on for years and gotten worse.

So I'm wondering, next time I go to dr for physical in a few months, will they pull my license with a diagnosis of that? Will I be able to pass the medical?

It says in the dot literature
"Has no established medical history of rheumatic, arthritic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease which interferes with ability to control and operate a commercial motor vehicle safely""

So is it basically up to the doctor to decide if I'm fit? For example, I can stand up and sit down and raise my arms above my head if he asks. It's more a muscle pain from repeated movements and weakness disease. I appear pretty normal. I can walk and everything. Lift my arms up ect.

Or does he see that disease I have and it's automatic fail?

    Thanks for the help guys!

You may want to call the motor vehicle department in your state and present the question to them.

    Good luck to you!

Oh geeze, I'm sorry to see this! My belief is that you probably should just take yourself out of driver's seat. Man there is just no gentle way to say it. You didn't ask for this, but you are stuck with it. And although there may be things that can help you, it is a matter of time before you won't be able to function very well.

Shirt tail relative of mine, (young guy, under thirty,) just passed from MD a few months ago. Left wife and a couple of kids.

To answer the question you asked, I can't imagine any physician renewing your DOT cert. I'm sorry.

Oh ok. thanks for the replies. Yeah my doctor doesn't think I have the terminal kind. I hope she's right. Some of them effect the involuntary /breathing/swallowing muscle function and sudden cardiac death as well, thus the early death. Sorry about your friend. Normal lifespan for the type she thinks I have. Well, I have to wait for final diagnosis then I'm going to to try to get disability. Heard it's a nightmare to get and they deny you unless you're in a wheel chair or blind. But we'll see. My dr never told me that. It's just from what I've heard from other people who have dealt with different conditions. I will try and contact dmv, but I think I'm just going to get somebody that will read me what I copy and pasted and tell me to just go to a doctor.

I'm sorry to hear that you have Muscular Dystrophy. If you are medically disqualified maybe you could transfer from the driving division to the dispatch division of your carrier. As for disability if you feel you need it go ahead and apply. The worse they can say is no.

Contacting the DMV is not going to help you. You have a disqualifying disease. With that said, it is completely up to the *DOCTOR* as to whether or not you are fully qualified. You cannot be partially qualified. For example, if you have high BP, some doctors will let you rest for a while and then take it again.

I just went through this, disqualification -- had open heart in Mar of 2013. I was finally cleared this past Friday and have my road test scheduled for tomorrow to get my license back. I had to get clearance from my heart doctor and cardiac rehab before the local state ME would clear me. So the bottom line is, your ME will make that decision, but in all honesty, you should probably decide not to drive a truck if you can't do it safely.

I hope your doc is right. Perhaps you should wait until you have a confirmed diagnosis before you "rock the boat!" Sometimes thing medical can actually work out in your favor. Not often I admit, but sometimes. Good luck to you, and I will be praying for you!
