Is there any guidance for exceeding Hours of Service due to a family emergency? For example, a family member is in the hospital and you have hit your 14. Can you drive an extra hour or so over to make it back to home base so that you can go to that family memeber?

you just go home do what you have to do
DOT might write you a violation big deal
safety might slap your hand big deal
but if it is the last time you see Dad before he goes into a coma in hospice who cares
now your 13 year old having her tonsils out might be less of an emergencystabob, bergy, kemosabi49 and 9 others Thank this. -
had a discussion today with a schneider driver
said his truck, once he is on his ten hour break, if he starts it, it will move about 5 feet before it shuts off
if he is driving and he runs out of hours, he has about 15minutes before the truck will slow to about 10mph
this is not what the HOS were ever meant to be, but now since a computer is running things, five minutes here, shutdown there, all for the sake of the almighty 11hrs
at 11.5 hrs, you are deemed a danger to society and should be shot on sightpattyj, cowboy_tech and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
Chucktaylor, SHO-TYME, baha and 6 others Thank this.

That's about the size of it mainly with trucking companies and don't wanna hear any excuses.Me on the other hand if I had a family emergency no doubt about it,I would drive that extra hr to get home and worry about what may happen concerning HOS later.Family does now and will always come first. If I had an emergency concerning a close friend I would still haul ### to get home.

I don't think so -
i cant say yay or nay, i dont use those things
but this is not the first i heard of these things shutting down, or slowing down -
I guess they would find their truck where it shutdown! Otherwise, I would find a good place to drop trlr and run that last hr home as private use/off duty.
