Quote:
MILWAUKEE: Most truckers play by the rules.
Mile for mile, they have fewer accidents than drivers of cars. When a car and truck collide in serious accidents, it's usually the car driver's fault.
But every day, a significant percentage of commercial truck drivers disregard the rules that are supposed to limit how long they work. Every month, surveys have indicated, one in eight long-haul truckers dozes at the wheel. Every year, hundreds of people die in crashes involving tired truck drivers.
All of which has critics of trucking regulatory policies ar Please see Truck, D4
guing that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration should scrap the paper logbooks in which truckers record their hours of work and rest. Instead, the critics say, the safety administration should order the use of an electronic system that the agency itself estimates would cut violations of hours rules in half.

If they think we cheat with our hours now, just wait until our HOS get changed later this year!! Electronic recorders would absolutely kill the industry! If the government wants us to run 100% legal they need to increase the freight rates to make it so you can still earn a living while waiting at shippers and receivers for 4-8 hours every day without getting paid for it.

It is my understanding that the current rules will stand until the FMSCA comes up with rules acceptable to the Courts. It is ALSO my understanding that the current rules were "thrown-out" because the FMSCA didn't allow enough time for "comments" before they enacted them. So, it could very well be that the rules will never change from their current position, if proper time is allowed for Comments.

At this point most every thing we hear is just hearsay. Nothing official yet.

That being said just this past Friday, I asked the friendly DOT man at the scales here about what he has heard. He made it very clear to me that there is nothing official, but the latest he's heard is that MAYBE FMSCA will make an agreement with the court that they need to look into the current rules more and arrive at a conclusion at a later date. There by keeping the current regs in place for the time being.

Drivers Hours

If you think the US drivers Hours are complex and restrictive, you should try driving in Europe within EEC Drivers hours regulations and at same time comply with the European Working time Directive laws. Add to this electronic Taco Graphs that record every move the truck or driver makes and prints it on to the chart. It is just about impossible to break the rules without it being caught.

Hey scania,

Haven't seen a tach-o-graph in years we used a lot of those back in the seventies. We learned several ways to "modify" their readings too ! As long as a driver can get his hands on it ....HE/She will find a way to mess with it !

I havn't see one since I was in the Army. I think it was the 5 tons that had them, because they were required in over seas.

FYI

The court has changed the regulations due to DOT not showing documentation on the "new rules" being effective. It is up to DOT and ATA to allow the current rules to stay in place until they figure out the new regulations or keep the same rules.

They are not going "back to the old rules" they are decreasing your amount of driving time. They will allow you 10 hours of driving time instead of 11, keeping the 14 hour rule.
