While written for sleep doctors this article covers the new advisory from FMCSA to medical examiners on sleep apnea.
Overdrive Magazine has also written a couple of articles on the topic. The new advisory clarifies that there are no FMCSA regulations requiring screening for sleep apnea. The decision is one to be made by the medical examiner.

Answers posted in the Forums prior to now should be checked against this new advisory as answers given in the past might now be wrong.
For example.... in the past treating sleep apnea with an oral appliance (mouth guard type medical device) was not allowed for DOT medical card holders. Now it's up to individual medical examiners whether or not to accept oral appliances.
Welcome to the complicated world of DOT medical exams.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
Could be a can o worms ,
if if they are Capatalist doctors and your overweight ,

If 1 Dr says no & another says yes, who's right & who's wrong?

If the doctor/nurse wants to measure your neck, flatly refuse. You can do this, otherwise if your neck is over 17 inches it can trigger an automatic sleep study. In my case I used my heritage/faith as a factor as I am Jewish. Told the nurse; "Jews, measuring and doctors have a bad history." (Bing Nazi race science). She apologized then told me the facts about the measuring, which is that anyone can refuse and if someone lets a medical professional do so, it can be grounds for a sleep study alone as well as a part of your permanent record.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
