Probably just climbed in when parked somewhere.

My mother bought a new SUV in Jan, while I was helping her clean out her old SUV, we found a mouse nest in the spare tire well.

Few years ago, my coworkers Jeep Cherokee caught fire soon after he got to work and parked. Turned out a squirrel had climbed into the engine compartment, died when he started the engine, and caught fire from the heat of the engine.

When I was little, my grandfather used to have an old AMC Hornet that had sat in his driveway for over 10 years. It had a few wasp nests in it every summer.

Vehicles aren't anything special to animals. They just see a large object that can shield them from the elements. It's no different from a pile of rocks or a hollow tree to them when it isn't running.

I hope there is never a murder in my sleeper. I'll be going to prison.

I wouldn't pay a deposit and I don't smoke, although there are 2 of us and 2 cats in the truck.

Just moved into a newer truck that had a heavy smoker in it, and the company we work for pays a few hundred bucks to have each truck detailed before a new driver moves in. We only change trucks maybe once a year.

The smoke smell wasn't really anything that a detailer could totally remove. It's gross and our clothes smelled smokey after the first trip.

    *shrug*

We haul tires and they tend to smell bad. We drive through the swamp in NJ and it smells bad and there's that stretch of 75 west of Knoxville that always smells like farts. C'est la vie, we have bigger fish to fry, so to speak.

IMO, cleaning the truck is a cost of doing business when someone has lived there.

Sure, I'd pay the same fee as the people that eat, drink, brush/comb their hair and/or stuff trash everywhere.

But it had better be lower than the fee for the people that cap in a bucket in the sleeper, or through a hole somewhere, or no dice.

Not just for smoke, but for general nastiness - I would require a deposit of ALL drivers then when they turn the truck in they get the deposit back. If there is damage beyond reasonable wear and tear then they don't get their deposit back. You'd have to lay out SPECIFIC terms, just like you would if you leased out a house. It would be up to you if a bad smoke smell is general wear and tear or not.

Just like in leasing out houses, you have to understand that (and budget for) there are going to have to be cleaning and repairs done for every turnover, however, that doesn't mean that your tenants (or in this case, drivers) get away free with trashing your property.
