What's the current reg on the requirement to write up a daily VIR? Recently there was some buzz about if there was nothing wrong with the vehicle, a written report was not required. Then, I bought some new log forms and the VIR is no longer on the back. Surely something is required and I probably need to find the forms. Thanks in advance for the help.

The DOT dropped the requirement for a daily DVIR. I think in December. Now the only time you have to fill one out is when you find a defect on your post trip inspection.

We have inspection booklets with 2 copies self carboned from Keller, with the company info required on them preprinted.

The booklets should be for sale.

You might want to look for logbooks/loose leafs with the DVIR included.

    [Docket No. FMCSA-2012-0336]

    RIN 2126-AB46

Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance; Driver-Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)

SUMMARY: FMCSA rescinds the requirement that commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers operating in interstate commerce, except drivers of passenger-carrying CMVs, submit, and motor carriers retain, DVIRs when the driver has neither found nor been made aware of any vehicle defects or deficiencies. This rule also harmonizes the pre- and post-trip inspection lists. It responds in part to the President’s January 2011 Regulatory Review and Reform initiative, removing a significant information collection burden without adversely impacting safety. The Agency also makes a technical change to section 396.11 to eliminate redundant language.

Note that the information on the FMCSA webpages for 396.11 has not been updated to reflect this amendment.
