I almost LOST a gun by doing just that. And for that purpose (going to Canada). Jammed it so far up inside the headliner I almost couldn't get it out. I'd stick to the pistol and leave the long guns at home, personally. That which you cannot carry on your person can easily be stolen if the truck is broken into.

The trucker was Reginald Denny who had his head bashed in with a cinder block,
    for no good reason.

    Somebody mentioned assault rifles...

    That reminded me of something,
When I was trucking for that other outfit I used to drive for I went to a gun show while I was on the road...on a 34 hour restart. And while I was there I found a good deal on an Armalite AR 10 upper receiver (thats the barrel and action assembly).

I bought it...on my way back home there was a license check going on at the north end of the tunnel on US 25E in Kentucky.

When the cop stepped up on the side of my truck he saw that laying in the passenger seat and he got "bug eyed" for just a second and stepped back off my truck...I quickly said "Its only the upper, not a complete rifle". He looked again and said "####, thats a first"...didn't even look at my license, just sent me on through.

It would not have mattered anyway...the upper receiver is not considered "the gun", that is the lower receiver (the part with the serial number on it)...that upper, even though it is a barrel and most of the action is considered by the ATF to be simply "gun parts" (it can be ordered through the mail and sent directly to my house)

Carrying a handgun in truck? Hard to get a permit for that in NJ?

Would it be tough to get a permit to carry a hand gun in the truck living in New Jersey? Would a long gun be easir to obtain a permit or is looking into a taser something worthwhile? How much of a concern is it sleeping in truck in all different places? Is everybody sleeping with one eye open or like babies without a care in the world

    MOVE OUT OF JERSY

All kidding aside, in NJ with a registered gun and taking it to the range, you cant even stop at a 7-11 and stay legal. I would hate to get even have a gun my my p/u, let alone a rig in NJ or NY. I know it was said here before that having a LEGAL gun in the truck is a tricky thing, every time you cross state lines the law changes, like in SC i have to keep it in my glove box, but when i hit NC i have to take it out and have it out in the open. Now i did carry my 40 with me, keep it locked in a lockbox under the bunk, with the clip and ammo locked in a different box, is the easiest way to stay legal but cant get at it fast if you need it rolling.

A taser would a another idea, also watch your sundering, keep your doors locked, and a flare gun i believe is a 48 state legal.

    I hope this helps Eagle

Guess my concern is being ready if someone tried to get in truck while sleeping and not necessarily thinking about having a gun handy all the time. So not a problem if you keep gun + ammo in separate locked boxes and then keep it more handy while sleeping?

depending on where i spent my 10, i would get it out, load it, and put it on the self, then before i took off i would unload it, store it and get moving again. I never had a problum, and never needed it, but i would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it, just make sure you dont take it into Canada.

In New york city, you may transport that weapon, BUT you may not stop while you have that weapon. So if you stop to get gas, eat and are pulled over and you have a pistol permit NOT from NYC, you are going to jail!!!!!

Yes you can transport it, just don't stop in the confines of the 5 boroughs.

Now in order for it to be legal, the weapon must be unloaded and locked in a secured box in a compartment seperate from the driver. If the driver has done that, there is nothing you can do about it, he is obeying the laws. Now as far as someone keeping a weapon in plain sight, that is just stupidity on their part, there is no reason for that kind of exposure. I am an ex LEO and knowing the law fully (that you intend to inforce) is the reponsibility of the officer. If you take action against someone who is fully in accordance with the law, you will open yourself up to a personal lawsuit, as you have violated their rights. I have personally witnessed an officer overstep his boundarys and watched him loose time at work, etc. trying to defend his actions. When the plantiff took the case to a civil court, he won due to the officers neglegence and it cost him big time. Nothing the department could do about it as it was a civl suit. They crammed that stuff down our throats religiously so we knew what we could and could not do. I suggest for your own protection and knowledge that you do the same. It is definitely a good CYA measure. Good luck to you and please be safe, there are a lot of crazies out there that think the laws do not pertain to them... always keep your gaurd up!

Gun laws are retarded. if everyone was armed, criminals would think twice before doing stupid stuff.

I have to say, i intend to get a CCW and a pistol now that im a biker. Just for when im at home. Theres a lot of thugs out there and theres nothing to protect you on a bike except you...hehe....
