I am still seeing to "MANY" drivers violating the 14 hour rule!

    Listen PLEAZE!

Once you enter lines 3 or 4 (after a 10 hour consecutive break) you only have 14 hours to get your 11 hours of driving in! So example:

    I do a pre-trip (or take off driving) # 4:00 am my 14 hour ends # 6:00 pm.
My 14 hour rule: I can NOT DRIVE passed that time! So in my case above I can NOT DRIVE passed 6:00 pm. NO REASON TO DRIVE PASSED IT, unless you want to split break (different subject, however a very important one :)

Now between 4:00 am & 6:00 pm I can not DRIVE over 11 hours.

Once you take a full 10 hour CONSECUTIVE BREAK you can drive another 11 hours!

    A few little tips

The line 3 (driving) total can be more than 11 hours, just remember the time after your 10 hour break is going into the next day (or 14 hour period)

To make sure you take a FULL 10 hour break (most common mistake is you log a 9.25-9.75 hour break, THAT'S NOT 10!)

Make sure you do not drive over 11 hours in that 14 hour period

Make sure you understand you can be on line 4 PASSED YOUR 14TH HOUR (fueling, loading, repaires, randoms anything just no driving)

Make sure you understand your 10 hour break can be done in 1 of the 3 ways listed below

    1) 10 hours "OFF DUTY" LINE 1
    2) 10 HOURS "SLEEPER" LINE 2
    3) ANY combination of lines 1 or 2 (no you don't "have" to have 8 hours in the sleeper) The 8 hours in the sleeper is the split breaking regulations (different subject)

Now for those drivers who say I don't split break and won't split break, there is no REASON for you to EVER drive passed that 14th hour! YOU SHOULD NEVER DO IT!

For those drivers who are open minded to split breaking, by all means check out my sticky thread and read on split breaking, then ask questions. Give me examples etc. I don't care I will help you get to understand it as much as I can. I also have 2 day example (real world one) but I must be able to e-mail it to you.

    Ok I think I covered it all:except

Hey did you know there is no reason to drive passed your 14th hour or you 70 hour "legally"? Nope DOT only states if you come upon unexpected situations (a road shut down due to accident etc) you have 2 extra hours on your 11 hour rule as long as you could have originally made that delivery with the scheduled time given without the adhverse condition. Finding a safe place to park is not one of them reason. You should quote the time frame the incident happend in the remark section and what happened. Accident, would be the main one. Chicago traffic will not be one as everyone knows it's always bad:biggrin_25525:

Now if you have to go over your 11,14 or 70 hour rule, most would rather you log what you did and write down what happened to cause it.

Ok wanted to start a new thread about it because to many drivers are still messing it up and I would LOVE to get you guys/ladies to understand the rule is the rule and you should follow them :yes2557:

Have a great night and I am ready for umm the Logs you preach to much etc stuff :biggrin_2559:

I understand it completely and have not had 1 log violation since i left Celadon :biggrin_25525:

Where I make my mistakes is, when I wake up and grab the log book when I am still not fully all together... Now I have learned to triple check all my logs before turning them in :biggrin_25518:....

Another Item is a ruler that has the hours marked on them.... Very important for me becuase this makes for fast and accurate checks....

just thought here for new guys... when you pull into park... don't go eat dinner and shower and then fuel the truck. going back on duty after you dinked around an hour or two wastes your log.

fuel and safety inspect first thing, fuel mid day, or fuel as your parking for the time stamp.

when possible, bump the dock the night before... if you can make it, then do so.

we had a guy whose favorite thing was to park early and finish the run in the morning. get up and drive a couple of hours and sit in line, on line 4.

hello??? you coulda been in line in the sleeper instead of blowing off 3-4 hours of your running time.

it doesn't always work out this way of course... just saying... you can only work 70 hours a week... why do you want to blow off workable hours piddling around mid day at the truck stop???

if you're only getting 2200 to my 3000 miles a week... it might be you aren't keeping the hammer down when its possible to do so...?

hope this helps, food for thought anyways...

I may, or may not, have committed a whopper of a HOS violation last week.

I was scheduled to dead-head from Leominster, MA to Philadelphia, PA this past Thursday AM. This usually requires about six, or, six and a half hours to accomplish. I made it to Hartford, CT and ran, head on, into that little New England blizzard that blew in that morning. Yikes! What a day, but, no dents, dings, or scratches. Yippee!

Here is the delima. My day was sixteen hours long, and the drive required twelve of them. No fudging allowed. I was time stamped too many times for that.

So, does the blizzard get me off the hook? I absolutely had to get the tank to Philly for cleaning and reloading. As long as the wheels would turn, I had to keep moving.

Whadda' ya' think Logs? Am I dead meat if I get checked before I can get that day out of my book? I did the little note of explanation in the comment section. Will it fly, or should I keep some extra cash on hand until that page is safely filed away?

Now do you know if the log auditor where you work is really giving you the reports of when you are going over? l.o.l. You know I did!

I made a ruler that has the 14 hour mark, I havent seen any others like it :biggrin_255: Do you still have my ruler but at a different company? l.o.l. I don't care, as long as it helps you! They changed my rulers and I was not happy:biggrin_25510:

Just make sure you line that ruler up to the clock correctly :biggrin_255:

Have a great day and be safe:yes2557:

Honestly the weather is usually not a factor because most know it is going to happen. The news usually tells you 5 days before it happens that it will happen, therefore you knew about it prior to dispatch. However I would log it as you did it and pray no one says anything. In my corrective action program I # least give you 1 violation in a months period. I have heard of more stricter companies (wow why, I don't know).

I think you will be fine, what dot doesn't want to see is catching you in a lie and usually in your case they would call you out since it is usually news to DOT/Police of major weather issue's.

I think you are fine and let me know what your log auditor says and umm maybe I can talk with them if they have a problem:biggrin_2559:

Do keep in mind DOT says you can not drive passed your 14 or 70 hour for ANY REASON what SO EVER! They only allow you 2 extra hours on your 11.
I feel they should adjust this for the 14 hour also, not so much the 70 hour you should stop before your 70 hour is up anyhow # least by 1 hour BEFORE IT IS uP!

For DOT and keeping money well I think you are ok, but you never know about that butt you might run into. Most are understanding, however I have heard of many harsh ones:biggrin_25510:

    Ok enough preaching
