What do I do with fuel tax/mileage sheets?

Hello from a newbie,

For the past year we hauled locally with a dump wagon, so we didn't have to worry about all this stuff. In Nov we bought a refer unit & started driving cross-country under a broker's authority until the engine broke down several weeks ago. We decided to get our own MC# and run under our own authority (became active the 4th). As soon as the truck is ready we'll hit the road. We also have an apportioned tag for 22 states.

While driving for the other company, my husband would fill out a mileage sheet (assuming for IFTA). The rows listed each state and the columns were listed: loaded miles, empty miles, total, fuel gal., route, tax rate (a different amount in each box), & tax due. At the bottom where the grand total goes, it reads "Total Fuel Tax".
After filling it all out, we'd just send it in to the other company and they took care of the rest. We have no idea what they did with it.

I know we need these, so I copied the format and printed out our own, customizing it for my husband's larger hand-writing.

My question is...what exactly do I do with them after they're filled out? I have looked & looked everywhere I could think of online (including Govt links) and couldn't find an answer to this question. I've seen ads where companies will take care of the filing for you for a cost and I emailed them with no responses yet.

Also, at the bottom is another smaller table labeled "Highway Use Tax Reporting" with just 4 states listed (KY, NM, NY, OR), no rates in the tax rates column, and where the grand total goes, it says "Total Use Tax". Is that necessary? What am I supposed to do with that?

Thank you.

Contact the office where you got the apportioned plates and ask them where to get registered for IFTA.

You will need the mileage records for IFTA and then again for the annual reporting for your apportioned plates.

The IFTA filing forms are fairly easy to complete. It might be good to have the help of an accountant or the IFTA office on the first report.

I'm already registered. I have to go down there tomorrow anyway, so I will take the sheets along with me and ask them about it.

Thank you.
