Been driving and have had my CDL for 23 yrs. Because i got a speeding ticket in my car 3 1/2 yrs ago,i had to take the CDL written test when i renewed my license this year. Without warning i had to take it,i failed the test, was real upset i did,i sat there and retook it 3 times in a row,<stupid yes i know> so failed 3 times, now IL says i had to wait 30 days. They still took my $60 for renewal, and gave me some little paper, said not good for identification, and good for 30 days. Didnt tell the big boss i failed, but one under him. Big boss found out,and i was fired. Been on this job 23 yrs, union job. My question is,does anyone know if i had like a grace period,by failing the witten test, did that mean my CDL was supsended? The girl at DMV said you can still drive, didnt state if she ment just my car,or my truck, and the piece of paper never stated anything, just good for 30 days. I have a grievence hearing in 2 wks,i need something saying it wasnt suspended just i had to retake test in 30 day, which i did take 4 days after fired and passed. I need help here, will lose my benifits, pension, and money if i cant prove i still had a valid CDL even though i failed the test. Not to mention this is so stupid us truck driver have to take the test ever time we get a speeding ticket on our own time, all because the ex governor was greedy in IL and passed out fake CDL's Thanks

You might pull this one off, with some help from your union.

But, you violated several Federal laws. And put your employer at serious risk. Very serious risk.

You did not lose your license. You lost your commercial vehicle endorsement. Ergo, you were not allowed to operate a commercial vehicle at all, until you had corrected the issue.

Dance, after over a week since this post, and alot of checking with different departments,IL secretary of state says i wasnt supost to be driving anything. So wasnt just a commercial, they said i couldnt even legally drive a car. So go figure, how this can be so,i fail a written CDL and i not only lost that for the 30 days but couldnt drive a car either. Yet the girl did say you can still drive, drive what my trike LOL. This is just so messed up

Oooops, I guess you didn't get a "regular" license before you left.

But you're right. It is a hosed deal.

Sorry you lost your job. But, you and I fall into the same category. We've done this long enough, we are supposed to KNOW the law inside and out.

While a rookie can get away with some things in a roadside check. You and I would get several tickets. Based soley on the fact, we have been out here so long.
