That comes from Table 2 of §383.51 from the FMCSR's and the way I read it it's only for the second offense. I could not find the cost for the first anywhere, so maybe you can give a reference?

You're 100% right that he should get the endorsement. It saves alot of problems and will keep his record clean. However, federal guidelines DO apply and it doesn't matter if he's driving intrastate or interstate. See § 390.3. I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time. However, I think it's important that drivers know there are many regulations that apply, so many it's very easy to miss a few.

Like has been said .... it is cheaper and easier to just get the endorsement and be done with it .... tanker is only a written test and takes about 15 minutes to do .... most states are $5 to add an endorsement

If they are going to ask even here and there to drive it .... its better to be safe than to take that chance on the road .... and even if you are a government employee for a city or county you are still regulated by the DOT .... if you werent the ones without the CDL could drive but they cant

I stand corrected sir. :biggrin_25514: Here in TX the Railroad Commission has authority over transportation. Lots of ag and especially oilfield exemptions are written in by them. Hours of service, permits, etc are much more liberal than Fed. But I would take your advice as you have many years of tanker service. Enjoy your posts. Always good advice.

The other guy after you was right...I didn't want to help out the Consruction side because of a conflict with the boss. But I took the higher road, and took your advice and went and took the tanker test today. I passed and paid the $34 fee, so now problem solved. I can be the bigger guy in the conflict. Now I just need to take my motorcycle, air brakes, tractor-trailer tests etc. Thank you for your imput:biggrin_25519:

OK here's another ??? about tankers. Can a driver fly out of state and drive a brand new tanker that has never been used back to the home state of the purchaser without HAZ-MAt or Tanker endorsements? Just a CDL "A" ???

Call your state DMV office and ask them.

I don't think you need the endorsement for an empty new trailer, but don't take my word for it.

I did mine last week. 20 questions all of which have the same general answer. Drive slow, drive slower, and if you don't drive really slow, that surging liquid stuff will push you through the intersection. Oh, and you can't have baffles in a food tank. That's about it.

Thats about it. The test was really easy. I studied it in the morning and took both the tanker and doubles and triples tests and passed them both first time with almost perfect scores. Waiting to do my Hazmat endorsement. Can't find my passport to show proof of citizenship. Anyone know how often you need to renew your hazmat endorsement?
