ON the truck for DOT you only need the last 7 days plus todays logs.

Now me as a log auditor I request my drivers to keep them on the truck for # least 2 months. This is because sometimes we will show a log missing and we need you to re-submit it. If you can't re-submit it then it shows as a missing log. This means you and I can get a fine 5 months down the road for missing that log. Also if you have log violations and the auditor is talking to you about them over the phone you can look over the log they are violating you for.

I can't be of much help because I run local now.I use an electronic time card for duty status. The only time I fill out a log is if my day exceeds 12 hours.I do know that employers and owner-operators(not leased) must keep log records for three years. You'll find that rule at FMCSA's website under "Disposition and retention of records".Do a search under 379.13 then hit Appendix A.

Federal DOT regulations require the carrier to keep them # least 6 months.
If you are an owner operator you will probably need to keep them 6 months as well.

Tax purpose you might want to keep them for 7 years! In case of an audit

Tax purposes are only 3 years for audit, from the date the return is filed. Anything longer is under investigation of possible fraud. And if fraud is an issue, permanently keeping the records is advised.
