Here's my question..............

Just when I thought I understood this damn thing, my mentor tells me this.

You can ONLY drive 11 total hours between midnite and midnite.

REGARDLESS OF A 10 HOUR BREAK IN BETWEEN!?!?!?!?!

Example........i had 3 hours of driving time from midnite to 3 am.
then take 10 consecutive hour sleeper berth until 1300.........he tells me i can only drive 8 more hours between 1300 and 2400.

is this correct??

when you take 10hr off that resets your 11 driving no matter what time it is. you can drive more then 11 in a 24hr day, as long as you don't go over your 70.

Damn if it don't sound like you drive for SRT or Covenant.

You can actually get 13.75 per day, provided you don't have to fuel that day. But I wouldn't push that issue with a DOT officer for more than a day or 2 a week. LOL It's legal but jeeez is he ever going to go over you with a fine tooth comb if you do it for 4 or 5 days in a row.

The law is simple. If you drive from midnight to 3am, then take a 10 break. You have the remaining hours to do a pretrip then drive. 13.75 total

Don't bother. Just do your time, and get into your own truck.

Your trainer is lazy. That doesn't mean you have to be.

When you get your own truck. Run it to the max, within the law of course. And, you'll be making good money. While others that believed him, will be looking at greatly reduced pay checks.

Your mentor is incorrect!
You could drive until 3:00 am the next morning, take a 10 and be on the road again.

The DOT regulation is misleading in the way it's worded, however believe me you will be in no violation!


395.3 Maximum driving time for property-carrying vehicles.


Subject to the exceptions and exemptions in § 395.1:

(a) No motor carrier shall permit or require any driver used by it to drive a property-carrying commercial motor vehicle, nor shall any such driver drive a property-carrying commercial motor vehicle:

(a)(1) More than 11 cumulative hours following 10 consecutive hours off-duty

The regulation does not state more than 11 hours in a 24 hour period.
Maybe putting it to him that way he will understand or have him get on here and talk to me! Most DOT examples do not show more than 11 hours in a day. They are only trying to get the basic point acrossed

Write DOT or E-mail them asking that very question and maybe he will then believe you!

Yes having more than 11 hours an officer might look at you closer!

However if you are logging it correctly then he can not write you up for anything. If he does then he doesn't understand the regulations fully

I can't disagree with you. But, I can honestly state they will put you under a magnifying glass if you log over 13 hours a day for several days in a row and they pull an inspection

They get to those nice questions, like "When was the last time you stopped to pee?" So I at least flag those ramp calls now to avoid the headache.

Rumbarrel - pay attention to BOTH LogsRUs and Danc694U. Then, grab your dot book and confirm what they've told you. Not because they are wrong (they're not) but so you know from having looked up the regs yourself. If somebody else comes along with that question, you can look as knowledgeable as I do by pointing to the rule and saying "see? "
