Targeted enforcement in NV?

I run east on I-80 from the CA border to Wells every week. In the last eight months I have never seen a truck stopped by State Troopers. Last week (in about five hours) I saw six trucks pulled over.

I run that stretch all the time and most trucks are doing warp 9 past me as I roll along at 65mph.

Another area to watch out in is HWY 168 out of Laughlin up to HWY 95 jnct. They work that strip from Searchlight to the dry lake bed like ants on sugar.

I was wondering how one gets a speeding ticket as the posted limit for most of that stretch is 75. Speed doesn't bother me (I've raced bikes and cars), but much faster than 70 with 80,000 lbs on hot tires doesn't interest me much ... neither does the fuel bill.

You are right. What you are seeing is exactly that, "targeted enforcement." Because Nevada has no permanent scales, the DOT moves from area to area for there commercial enforcement.

They spread out all over the state, and you never know where they will be working next.

I know Las Vegas only had a couple of DOT officers with the state police a few years ago. I know because we would supply them a truck so they could practice their inspections. Our mechanic would make a few parts an OOS item to check their proficiency. I'm sure by now they have more inspectors. The one thing about Nevada is they will leave you alone out on the road but will nail you in town. That is unless they've had complaints and target certain areas or you're running 20mph over the speed limit.

It was funny when I was running triples out of Vegas doing the Tonopah turn there was a local cop in Goldfield that had one headlight out. This went on for a few weeks. Every driver knew it was him and would cruise through town at 25mph.

What they need to do is open that inspection station for buses right before Las Vegas all the time. Maybe that would stop some of the run-a-way buses coming down mountain pass.

I have been stopped couple of times, usually targeting Haz Loads, per the officers. They sit on the side with the window cracked, listening to the trucks roll by - pull the ones with the noisy trailer tires - good indicator of other issues, again per the the DOT officers.

There's been 2 or 3 run-a-way trucks down the grade you talk'n about in the last few months. They've run right into cars and off that Colorado River Bridge. Someone was telling me about a run-a-way truck and I said I know I heard about that a truck going over the day before yesterday. Then he said no, I'm talk'n about the one that happened yesterday, and said WHAT. Yeah, it happened one run-away after another.

I had not heard of the runaway either,Hwy 68 on the AZ side does rack up one or two a week though. I used to work down in BHC alot and have seen both runaway ramps occupied at the same time. Drivers don't realize the grade or distance to the bottom of the hill. Before they rebuilt the road back in 2000/02 we used to call it 13 mile hill. That was before they had the saftey/brake check pullout at Union Pass.

I used to get a kick out of heading out of Bull Head toward Kingman, before they rebuilt the road. That one rock formation that looked for all the world like a big fist giving you the finger.

We used to call it the "Old Laughlin Goodbye!"
