TSA "No Security Threat Letter" for HazMat
I'm trying to get an idea how long the TSA takes from the finger-print stage to sending out the "No Security Threat Letter". Since all Sea Ports are, by year end, requiring TWIC credentials for their employees (same background check), I understand the system is jammed and very slow. I need a HazMat Endorsement ASAP, and need the letter before I take the test.

This question is probably only relevant if you got your letter in the last two months.

I let my haz mat drop in 2007. I got it in 2006.

I renewed last month.

Fingerprinted on Monday. Letter received on Saturday. New license on Monday. Little over a week.

Your clearance was still active if you got it in 2006 - (good for 5 years)
I have been waiting 3 weeks today, still no letter

My initial one only took 2 weeks in 2006. Had my hazmat within 3 weeks.

They advised me mine was NOT active since I failed to renew it 6 months prior to the license renewal in March of 2008.

Mine only took two weeks. Been waiting 4 weeks for the hard copy of my new Class A drivers license. I called DMV two days ago. Seems it has to be released manually by the DMV because of the TSA and the hazmat endorsement. Sure wish I had known to call the DMV as soon as I had the letter informing me that I am not considered a terrorist threat by the good ole USA!

You can take the test anytime but before they will issue a license with the hazmat on it the clearance has to be approved.

I took my test when I first got my permit and then I had to start finding funding and a school.

You should not wait untill you need the endorsment to try and get it.

At that time there may be a huge back log because so many people will need it.

I did my fingerprints while everyone else was at the dmv getting there permit's then by the time school was over and I had my 3rd party cdl test results to get my license everything was back on the fingerprints.

It took six weeks for me to get the letter in the mail. Luckily, about a week after I did my prints, I had reason to be at the Motor Vehicle Department and wouldn't you know, they already had my clearance. I would suggest you call the state DMV.

That is because the dmv gets the info sent eletronicaly to them.

Over a month and still waiting
Maryland MVA loves to make it difficult to do anything. I cannot take the test until I have received a hard copy of the No Threat assessment. I was fingerprinted over a month ago, but have not received anything but a letter from the DMV stating that the prints have been submitted to the FBI, and that arrived yesterday. That letter suggests another 4-6 weeks.

My advise to anyone in MD considering a HME, apply before you need it. As you see from the responses, other states seem to act quickly and actually try to help the drivers.

That's a bummer there Mountain Trucker.

I finally got the hard copy of my license in the mail yesterday! 4 weeks and 4 days from the date of the DMV test.
