If I start # midnight do 3hours on duty not driving like pretrip and loading then drive 11 hours arrive at receiver at 1400 then spend 1400 -2200 unloading then do into sleeper-- I'm notin violation??? I thought I couldn't work after 14 hour no matter what.

    I don't split log off duty,too confusing.

If I start # midnight pretrip 15 minutes then drive 1215am-1115 am can I go off duty from 1115am-1315 then 1315-2115 sleeper??

If you start at midnight 12:00 am then your 14 hour is up # 2:00 pm.

Yes you can work passed 2:00 pm all you want, you just can not DRIVE.

The easiest way to understand the 14 hour is "once you start your day of lines 3 or 4 count over 14 hours on the clock.
The driving time in that period can NOT be MORE than 11 hours of DRIVING. If you drive passed 2:00 pm you are in violation of your 14 hour rule. You will also be in violation if you stop # 2:00 pm and only take 9.75 hour break (that's most common mistake drivers do).

You can WORK on line 4 all you want passed the 14th hour because you won't be behind the wheel risking my life, your life driving.
Yes you can combine your lines 1 & 2 to get your 10 hour consecutive break.

DOT just states you must have a 10 hour break. That 10 can be
    1) 10 hours in the sleeper
    2) 10 hours off duty (hotel, friends etc)
    3) 10 hours of combined lines 1 & 2 as long as there is no lines 3 or 4 interrupting it. Meaning you can not do any work during that 10 hour break like fuel, delivering etc.

Does that clarify a little better?

I don't know if TMC will let you or not. I agree that it's very usefull to the company and driver but most won't let you. Call your log dept and ask, they shouldn't bite your head off for asking but I have heard horror stories l.o.l. Like me

I would split my log at least once per week at TMC.

Thanks bangngears, Rawlco and LogsRus. I've been printing out the information on splitting as well as the examples presented, studying them repeatedly, in order to be able to demonstrate that I understand it well. It's a work in progress but I'm getting there.

Rawlco, at your convenience, I would be interested in having you explain your thought process on how/when you split. At what point in your week do you do it, and why? How do you employ splitting to your advantage? Is your decision as to when you split based upon the load you are hauling or one that is waiting for you? Any information you're able or willing to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Days you have several drops might help in some cases. It's more when you should take a 10 you only need 8 (IF YOU HAVE a 2 hour break before the . Meaning if you drive 5 stop 2 and drive 6 then you only need to take 8 but you will only be able to drive 5 hours after that 8 and only need a 2 after you drive the 5. l.o.l. wow a mouth full there .

Delivery time: Lets say your day ended at 11:00 pm and you needed a break but haven't driven all of your 11 hours. Well take an 8 hour sleeper break and maybe you can make your delivery on time. Count over 8 hours from your 14 hour period (or if you need 9 hour break) count over 9. Then see if you can make that tight delivery.

Or in general: If you like to stop 2 hours a day to eat/shower (hint to some drivers SHOWER) and it's part of your routine you only need to shut down 8 if you "want" instead of 10. That makes up for the 2 hours you stopped earlier.

So you drive 5 stop 2 drive 6 stop 8. Drive 5 stop 2 drive 6 stop 8. It allows you to break that 10 up instead of shutting down for a FULL 10 hour break. In my opinion that's how the regulation should be for the 10 hour break but it's not. It is in Canada for the most part except they get more driving hours.

How is Canada's accident ratings? Are they better than the USA? I don't know but I wonder

Just a few ways I can think of but one driver said he split breaked all the time because every day it helps him get to terminal before that driver who WON'T (learn) split break so he is first to get loaded. Made sense to!

I wish that someone would do something to make all this logging easier to understand. As a new driver I know the 11/14 deal and from all the runs I have done so far running legal is near impossible. The guy that I am running with says our logs are legal but I can't figure out how and I am about to be out on my own and all I see in my future are big tickets or no miles because I don't get the log book. I guess I will just have to learn it the hard way.
