How far back can they go ?

How far back can they go, on your abstrac or DOT record or DAK, when it comes to turning you down for employment. Had a recruiter from Werner tell me that cause I got a DUI 28 years ago they will not hire me.

DAC can only give out negative information for the past 7 years and that only covers employment . Companies can do a background check as far as they want to though . If they go into Canada they need to know about any DUI .
There are many companies that will hire you with that DUI though . You just have to look harder . A DUI won't keep you from getting hazmat either . Being rejected by Werner is nothing to lose any sleep over .

Werner will no longer hire anybody with a DUI weather it be1 year or 100 years. There was a thread on the forum about this same topic.

    digging in the past

What does a trucking company have access to? I've been trying to find out who they get their info from and have my record pulled for my knowledge. Can anyone fill me in on this?

I'm not that worried, but would like to know what I need to disclose. Being that I have never had a DWI/DUI, never had a reckless driving charge, never had a criminal record, and I'm a prior service Army vet - you would think I wouldn't be concerned. But I am....

I did have my license suspended about 20 years ago (I was either 17 or 18 years old, can't remember exactly) for a failure to appear on a speeding ticket - I just plumb forgot the date. As a result I got pulled over and arrested on a bench warrant, car got towed, and I was out the next day. I recovered and parked my ride, went to court, rode my skateboard to work for the next 6 months, and got my license back. Is this what a trucking company wants to hear?

Any info on this would help a ton, because I don't want to be an orientation reject. This is a scary thought, considering I just graduated Friday from a CDL school and am getting my CDL A license this week. I've heard a 30 to 60 day limit from most trucking companies, and I won't have the time to get through an orientation - only to be denied on something stupid.

Thanks in advance, and Truckers Report rocks!

All applications ask if you have been convicted of a felony . Some ask if you have ever been arrested . No doubt they have a company doing background checks . Google background checks . Anybody with minimal information on somebody can get their complete criminal history . Answer all questions on the application honestly .

HwyPilot, I don't think (think being the operative word here, as this is just my opinion,) that you will have a problem with this. First off, it is not a felony, I don't care where you are.

As Rick said, be completely honest and open on your application. But if it doesn't ask about a misdemeanor arrest when you were a kid, then you don't need to worry about it. I've never seen an application that asked that question.

A lot of companies use the USIS Report, also known as DAC. But it is doubtful that they will have any info on you, since you are just starting out. If you want to find out for sure, Google USIS and check out their website.

Keep in mind that there is a big difference between being arrested, and being convicted of a crime. There is also a big difference between a felony and a misdemeanor.

As I said, I really don't think this is something you need to worry about. Don't try to hide it, but don't bring it up, unnecessarily. Remember that in this economy, there are many reasons why someone may be hired, and someone else not hired.

    Good Luck!

I have had 2 background checks run recently, one by a company called Fastback, and also my DAC report. Both came back showing absolutely nothing. Which is a bit surprising as I know there were some things back 25+ years ago. BTW, I just filled out the on-line app for Central Ref and they asked about misdemeanors.
