Mr. Hillbilly is correct, as has been mentioned by several people in this thread alone. If you still think it is illegal, TrailrTrash, please provide evidence.

If you believe it to be illegal to carry in your truck, by all means don't..

The rest of us will..

Got an answer back from Illinois State Police, just as I thought....it is not illegal to transport a firearm through the state. If you take the steps indicated on the ISP website. I've copied the email I sent and the response I received below:

I have a general question regarding the transportation of a firearm through
the state of Illinois. Before passing through the state I want to be certain I understand your laws regarding the transportation of a firearm. I read the FAQ and it looks as though I would be considered in compliance with the law as long as the handgun is unloaded, stored in a case, and not readily accessible. Please let me know if the way I have interpreted the FAQ is indeed correct or what other steps I would need to take in order to be in compliance with Illinois law.

Mr. H,
Thank you for writing ASK ISP. Yes you have read the law correctly and will be in good shape if you follow the guidelines you have stated. Have a good trip.

So to recap, there is no federal law against the transportation of a firearm in a CMV see post #78 by j777 (response from DOT). States set the rules for firearms. As you can see by the response from the ISP you CAN transport a firearm through the state of Illinois as long as it is unloaded, in a case, and not readily accessible. If you still don't believe....don't carry your firearm. If you chose to carry, be diligent and check with the State(s) you intend to pass through.

Not a bad idea. Would also be nice to know what states have reciprocity agreements and with which states they have them.

Now, email them again and tell them that you will be transporting this gun in the cab of your Big Truck. How much do you want to bet, that answer changes?

If it doesn't i'd be ultra-super-mega-suprized.
