New hazmat requirements take effect for U.S. drivers in Canada

New hazmat requirements take effect for U.S. drivers in Canada
Quote:
Attention, hazmat haulers hauling into Canada: The federal transportation ministry no longer accepts a hazardous materials endorsement as the sole evidence that a driver has completed necessary training.

Additional proof is now required in the form of a certificate of training, according to Transport Canada. These certificates, obtained at the completion of required training, must be available to show to inspectors, said Transport Canada Spokeswoman Maryse Durette.

“Canadian legislation requires that a person who handles, offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods be adequately trained and hold a training certificate. Their training certificate is their proof of training and must be provided to an inspector upon request,” Durette told Land Line on Thursday, Oct. 1.

No problem. They probably have the certification in place. Where ours is lacking. I think it might just be a good idea to expand into our country as well.

i don't see what training would do. our abilities to handle verious emergencies would be limited to no equipment on truck to handle those emergencies. i understand the idea, but really. we just haul the stuff. people that handle the emergencies are equipped, and prepared. and they train over and over. what does do for truckers? we take a class and test. get our certs. but who's going to have the equipment. and who's going to even remember everything there needs to be known. not like an emergency is going to be an every day occurence.

Right on snowwie. No one ever remembers what the mumbo-jumbo means on a BOL after taking the haz-mat test. Like you said, if there's an emergency, all drivers can do is get away from it and call their dispatcher and Chemtrec.

My company just had us take a course called CTEP (certified training employee program ) This coverd Hazmat transporting, safety, cargo loading / unloading and a bunch of other stuff. There was an actual test at the end. Once we received our certificates we were told to make copies and carry them in the trucks. We were told that DOT was asking drivers if we had any training. There was no issue if you told them "no". But they are asking!! OH, I transport propane.

So if one already has a CDL w/Hazmat - where do we get this extra certificate and does anyone know if that can be done on-line? - I had always thought my license endorsement was enough - guess not.

Wouldn't it make sense for the transporters to know what to do, even if to direct responders that are often under-trained volunteers, since it is most vulnerable WHILE IN TRANSIT?

You can get the certificate complete with carbonless copy at truckstops. JJ keller makes it. Covenant gave us one after giving us a test and..get this..giving us all the answers. They went through the test with us and had us just blurt out the answers. And then when it was the right one he said thats right. and everyone marked it down!!
