Forgive me if I am wrong but I believe you can only drive 11 hours in any 24 hour period correct? If so, if you look at 3pm, he will have driven 12 hours thus running over 1 hour correct?

Can you quote the one that you are stating is incorrect and I can explain.

However you can drive more than 11 hours in a 24 hour period.
Your 11 & 14 hour rule is not based on a "24" hour period.

What you base it on is once you have a 10 hour break you now have a new 11 & 14 hour rule. So if you start your day right you can sometimes get more than 11 hours of driving in

This is legal on the 11 & 14 hour rule. Now you may violate in my below example of not logging your pre-trip or post-trip etc however you are not in violation of the 11 & 14 hour rule which is what we are discussing.

12:00 am to 11:00 am drive 11 hours
11:00 am to 9:00 pm 10 hour break
9:00 pm to 8:00 am the following day.

That is totally legal. Take a 10 hour break and you are on the road for another 11 hours.
Many drivers lose miles because they don't realize they can work more than 11 hours in a day.

Also line 4 does NOT come out of your driving time.
If I am on line 4 for 30 minutes I can drive 11 hours still

I hope that clarifies so maybe you won't have to quote the message you was referring to:biggrin_25525:

Have a great night and again this is how others learn by someone questioning what they read so keep it up:biggrin_25514:

Here is the deal though the 2 hr break is included in the 14 hrs. As stated in the first example. That after the 8 the 14 is calculated to 5am that is not the case the 2hr break after the 8 is included in the 14 so you must complete the 2hr break before 5am the 2nd day putting the 14 (working)hours potential at 3am. then the 2 hrs putting you at 5am. If you are working or driving after 3am you will be in violation.:biggrin_25519:

Ok you are confused and this might be tough for me to explain but I will give it a shot. Your message kind of confuses me so I am just going to explain it.

If you look on just the day 1 example ok: I am posting a picture of it so it's a better way to see what's happening.

He split breaked so the 8 hour break prior to midnight on the previous day we are not concerned with because the 2 hour break from 5:00am to 7:00 am is working with that 8. So we started our 14 hour from the END of the previous split break (which is the 8 hour break prior to midnight)

Keep in mind when you split break the 8 & 2 hour break is only going to clear out any hours worked prior to the 1st break. So on the 8 & 2 break you see on the log image I am posting is clearing out all time prior to 5:00 am. Just a food for thought there.

So you go to the end of the 8 hour break and count over 14 hour.
Now DOT says if you have 8 hours in the sleeper you can extend your 14 hour by the amount of hours in the sleeper. So I have 8 hours in the sleeper so I get to count over 8 hours. So here it is
My 14 started # 7:00 am so I count over 14 hours that makes my 14 end # 9:00 pm. Now I do have 8 hours in the sleeper so I get to count over 8 hours from my 14 hour so my 14 hour really ends # 5:00 am the next day.
The driving time available is figured by adding up all driving time in BETWEEN the 8 & 2 hour break. So in between the 8 & 2 I had 7 hours of driving right?
So always take 11 and subtract the # you have in between the 2 breaks and that's how many hours you have available to drive.
    11-7=4

So if I take off and drive my 4 from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am I must stop that truck. However if I decide to fart around I really have up until 5:00 am to do that 4 hours of driving time.

You never can split break if you just drove 11 hours because 11-11=0

It's nothing but a pattern basically.

You can say if you are coming off your 8 hour break (meaning you have your 2 hour break prior to the 8) you can go to the end of your 2 hour break and count over 22 hours it would be allot easier! However lets say you took 8.5 hours in the sleeper then you could really count over 22.5 hours from the end of your 2 hour break.
If you are coming off your 2 hour break go to the end of your 8 hour break and count over 14 hours and that's when you MUST stop driving.
You will notice that's because there is no 8 hour sleeper break to extend the 14 hour.

Read my thread I reposted and this and maybe it will help clear it up.

Did this help answer your question?

Remember DOT says in a 14 hour period you have 11 hours to drive. If you look between 12:00 am to 2:00 pm I did not drive over 11 hours and I did not drive passed 2:00 pm. I took an 8 hour sleeper break I have to be good for something rest wise so they allow you to drive some more.

All driving time must be cleared out by a 10 hour break. If you notice I have a split 10 to clear out the driving time from 1:00 to 5:00 am. the driving time from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm does not get cleared out until I have the 2 hour break to follow my 8 hour break.

I think you are focusing on the fact your lines 3 & 4 shouldn't total more than 13 or 14 hours and this can cause you some serious log violations. Have you called your log dept to see how you are doing lately? :biggrin_2559: Not laughing at you but laughing at us:biggrin_25521:

    starting at midnight.

    2 hours sleeper (8am)
    drive 5 hours (1 pm)
    8 hours sleeper (9 pm)

i have a new 14, but it starts from the time that the 8 hour began? 1pm = 3am ?

    NO NO NO!

Your 14 hour starts from the end of the 2 hour break!

See the 8 & 2 is clearing out the time you worked prior to the 2 hour break. Everything after 8:30 am is still counting against you or for you (8 hour break is for your good).

So you count over 14 hours from 8:30 am which made your 14 originally end # 10:30 pm. Now because you have 8 hours within the 14 hour period you get to extend your 14 hour by 8 hours. So you count over 8 hours from 10:30 pm which makes it end # 6:30 am.
Your drive time available by my example is and yours is going to be 6 hours, however I must complete that 6 hours before 6:30 am the next day. If I hurry up drive my 6 I can take my 2 and be on the road again.

So day 2 you can see I drove until 4:00 am. Now my 14 hour is going to restart at the end of my 8 hour break so count over 14 from 10:00 pm (day 1 log) which makes your 14 hour end # 12:00 pm (which I put the mark # 12:30 sorry it should be 12:00 either way you are not in violation because we was not driving passed that 14 hour and I took my minimum 8 hour break before driving again)
My driving time available was 5. I even stopped to eat/load etc for 1 hour.
After my last 8 hour break I will go to the end of the 2 hour break and count over 14 hours and extend that count by 8 hours or you could just count over 22 hours from 6:00 am on day 2 and that's when your 14 hour will end.

Keep reading this and drawing some examples out until you get it! It helps to draw the picture as to try and just read it.

I am here to help this weekend # least.

ok, so its 14 hours from the time that my 2 hour ended

which in my mini example, would make it over at 10 pm.
but because i took the 8, i can extend that by the 6 hours i drove before the 2 hour. which is 4am.

so if i stop at 4 am and take a 2 hour break. my 14 then moves its start time to the beginning of my 8 hour break? (1 pm) and i can in theory then drive the 5 hours that came before the 8 hour break, before i have to take another 8 hour break, and start the shennanigans all over?

logs i have a real world example for you and I'm pretty sure I did it right, if not I'll be in a log class lol.

    ok

day 1 - went on line 4 for 15 min pretrip at 13:15 (1:15 pm)
go to line 3 at 13:30 and drive til 16:30 for total of 3.25 hrs.

went in sleeper berth for 8 hrs at 16:30 (wasn't feeling well)

day 2 - went on line 4 for pretrip 15 mins at 00:30

went to line 3 at 00:45 and drove til 03:45 am total of 3.25 hrs

THEN went to sleeper from 03:45 to 06:45 when the customer woke me up.

Went on line 4 from 06:45 to 07:15 then to line 1 from 07:15 to 09:00.

At 09:00 went to line 4 for 15 minutes as I checked on some possible damaged goods and then went to line 3 at 09:15 and drove to 12:15 and then I went on line 4 from 12:15 to 13:15 for live load.

Went back to line 3 from 13:15 to 14:30 and went off duty for 12 hours straight between line 1 and 2.

    Did I do it right??????

Before you guys say something smart, yes I can see where many would say there was no reason to split however, you had to be there and in my shoes at the time to understand why I did it. I had my reasons.

Your getting there just a little more work!

Remember your 14 hour restarts from the END of your previous break. So go to the end of your previous break and act like it's a 10. count over 14 hours.
If you have 8 hours in the sleeper after that previous break then you can extend your 14 hour by 8 hours. YOu always extend the 14 hour clock from the actual clock.

So on image 2 you saw I had a mark at the top that said 14 hour. Make marks like that to keep track of your 14 hour. That mark means do not drive passed it until you have either your next break needed or a 10 hour break
    I hope I attatched the 2 log images earlier:biggrin_25524:
