I know there are a lot of jobs in North Dakota, my husband is going to start one soon. I was wondering if anyone has worked or is working up there and can tell me what the conditions are. You can be honest, I'm not too worried, I just want him to be prepared. From what we are seeing there are hardly any places to live or even stop and shower. Is that the case? Are there any truck stops? How long will he be driving in one day? Any information helps. Thanks

I have no personal experience but from my research housing is tough to find and very expensive. There are a few truck stops. In most cases you work 12 hours a day and won't be able to use the truck as your home since it runs 24 hours a day. Almost everything is in short supply. The threads I gave you will cover it all and give you more than one person's view.

    Thanks Big John,
That was a big help. It does seem like everything is in short supply. You'd think they'd start building more stops and camps.

You are very welcome. I've been looking at this myself. I believe the money is nearly the same and the conditions might be better in Texas. Of course the weather would be a matter of personal preference.

I've read somewhere that they were building more housing in ND. It was a post by a local person that said developers were getting plans approved for a couple of apartment communities but I can’t remember the city. It is such a sparsely populated area with regard to the rest of the U.S. that it will be quite a job to meet the demands of the additional oilfield workforce. In addition, local builders and developers would need to consider the consequences of an oilfield bust on the local economy with nearly double the needed housing. I don’t know if it’s true but I hear tell that some of those notorious FEMA mobile homes are making their way North now.

If you compare populations you soon see the magnitude of the problem. I have no idea what the real number of new workers is or exact up-to-date populations of the areas. Let’s just say we have 10,000 new oilfield workers.

If we deposit those workers around Seguin, Texas with a population 26,000 that would be a 39% increase in population. However San Antonio is only 40 miles away with a population of almost 1.4 million. That would only be a 0.7% increase and the vacancy rate in apartments alone could probably handle 5 times that.

Now let’s deposit them in Williston, ND with a population of 13,000. That is a 77% increase in population. Not to mention it is often more than a hundred miles to another city of any size. The population of North Dakota is around 680,000 so 10,000 workers would be an increase of 1.5% to the state. Now I’m not knocking this, where I live I drive 30 miles to work to get away from the population.

Have you looked at companies closer to where you live? Intermountain Transport is working the WY/CO Oilfield out of a terminal up near Cheyenne. Foster, High Plains, and a bunch of other trucking companies are hauling fresh/flowback/production water in this area for the Oilfield. Take a drive up to one of the water disposal sites up around Greeley/Kersey/Platteville/Briggsdale, and ask the drivers who show up for employment contact info. The ones I have been to are High Plains right off CR49+CR54, Conquest (C7) at CR392+CR74, and Apollo at CR392+CR61.5. Conquest has a bunch of disposal sites around; C1 is down in Kersey, and there is another one down in Platteville somewhere.

Where in ND is he going? I know that JUst south of Tioga and 3 miles west on 2, there is a 300 man camp and 3 weeks ago they were expanding it by adding an 800 man camp. Dalton and Vision Logistics (rig movers) both woprk out of that camp and have their yard adjacent to it.

They are also making 111 RV sites at the same location.

Your husband needs to find a job that provides housing or man camps. Around Dickinson you are not going to find anything unless someone needs a room mate. They built a new hotel there and before it was done Halliburton rented the whole thing and sign a five year agreement. The residents do not want the oilies their and their is no new homes being built, they now this is not going to last for ever and then everyone packs up and leaves. The businesses and the farmers love the oil field companies because they are making them rich but the locals don't. Plenty of work and top wages.

My husband works in the New Town, Mandaree, and Watford City area. Conditions are terrible! But even worse are the companies that operate in the area....BIG PROMISES but nothing but LIES. Many owner/operators are owed $20,000-70,000.00 with promises of payment but only have received pennies! Many owners/operators have spent many months living in hard conditions. NOT WORTH IT!!! Stay away or make sure you research the company before going to North Dakota. Blackstone is run by a young man that is only interested in lining his own pockets and using tribal member for frontman!!! CROOKED!!!!! They will steal money from hardworking truckers, they need to research before they make the trip!
