My husband drove for 7 years, but 11 years ago he quit driving. Four years ago he got a DUI (3-1/2 years since actual conviction). We met, got married, and he turned his life around and has had no other problems since. We decided it was a great time in life for us to go trucking as a team. When we went to the school he attended to talk about enrolling me, we were upfront about his DUI, and the recruiter told us that my excellent driving record would make up for his bad, especially if I graduated in the top 3 in the class. They said getting a job would be more challenging but very possible. The companies I called then all said he would need a refresher but that they consider DUIs on a case by case at 3-1/2 years, so we thought it would be possible. We got a loan for me to go to school and paid even more money for him to take a refresher. I quit my job and went to school, worked my butt off, even going in on weekends for extra practice, and graduated #1 in my class. Now that we have started looking for job, no one is willing to hire us. They have all said if his driving time had been more recent it would be a possibility, but even with the refresher course, the DUI knocks us out of consideration. So now I have no job, a huge school debt, and no job forthcoming.

Do any of you know of any companies who would work with situations such as ours? My only other option is to go out solo, but as a woman that is just not a welcome option for me, but if that becomes my only option do you know of any companies who guarantee weekly home time and who are decent for a woman to go with? I thank you for your time in reading this and apologize that it is so long.

Ok, so you want, to team with your husband, so you quit your job, went to school, got a loan, got another loan for your husband to go, and now no company will consider you two as a team due to his dui. You started to see some light in going solo, but now you want to be home on weekends? Try not to demand too much. I wish you would have found us before, most companies do not consider DUI's until after 5 years, it shows gross negligence. If you are in NC you may want to consider epes.

    Hey shookup

No matter what you will have to go out without your hubby with most companies because you need to have on the job training and most companies will not train hubby and wife at the same time in the same truck.

I would say just get a job driving a truck with a good comapny and hubby will just have to wait to drive.

Echoing what others have said, you need to get a job driving to get some experience, your husband may find a job at a smaller company that is self insured and needs drivers, but that company would want you with some experience, not just school. Try to get a job that runs freight near where you live so you can see each other more often, but don't ask for too much too soon. In a year and a half, or maybe less, if they go by actual occurrence and not date of conviction, your husband will be in a better position to start driving for more different companies.

Good Luck hon, DUI is a tough one. These guys are right though, you need a job, and the experience. Maybe you could go OTR and start paying off those bills, and he could just be the rider. You'd still be together, and your getting the experience. Work together though, don't let this pull you apart.

Thank you all for your input. Since I graduated 2 weeks ago, I guess I have about a week to regroup here and make up my mind on what to do. The reason I had asked about companies that get you home every week is because Averitt came to my school while I was there and said they insist on every driver getting home weekends so I thought there might be more out there like that. I know that is not the norm in the industry, but I guess Averitt does mostly regional so they can do that. At this point, as frightened as I am of the prospect, I am going to apply with them. I was VERY impressed with them at the school but didn't really consider them because they didn't fit with me and hubby's plans. Now that things have changed, they seem to be my best option. They have a terminal right here in my hometown, and their HQs are just 3-1/2 hours from me. I figure I have nothing to lose by trying to get on with them and seeing what happens. I have a spotless driving record (no tickets even since 1985!), a spotless work history, and I graduated #1 in my class. If I could back worth a darn I'd feel more confident, but the recruiter said they never give up on someone, and they would give me extra training with that if I didn't "get it" well enough during regular training. My horoscope last week (which I usually don't put much stock in) said "Alas, the time has come to prove what you can do on your own." I so hoped that wasn't going to apply to trucking, but it appears it does, so here I go.

What state are you in. If you are in NC I may know a company that will take both of you.

This is going on your word that he has quit his wayward ways. I will not recommed a driving job to anyone that drinks and drives, even on a bicycle.

We all have made mistakes in our life, but DUI is a major one.
