| Central Transport (not Central Refrigerated) Does anyone know if Central Transport (Yellow color trucks and trailers with daycabs) is a good place to work. I have an interview there next week. They have a position for Road/Dock Driver. I do know that you load your own truck. They pay by the hour but I haven't found out what the rate is yet. Anyhow, I had 8 solid years in trucking before I was fired a year and a half ago from a really good job. I tried to get a website business up and running at the same time I worked for them and it failed. My work performance went down and was fired after being warned by the trucking company. I had about a 10 month stint away from trucking. Since then I've had 3 jobs with bottom of the barrell type of companies (Each one worse than the last). I'm just looking to get my career back on track and am worried about how I will explain this at the interview. Any ideas as to how I can explain the past year and a half to my perspective employer? |

| i sub-leased a truck at their colton CA facility in 2004.some of the freight that came off the rail was a mess. we did not have any liftgate trailers on the west coast but we had lift gate freight.this meant hand offloading stuff.the money was pretty good but there were some issues on the Motor Carrier Permit.they have since phased out all contractors and all loads are now done by co drivers.last i heard they were paying around 16-19 per hour on a 50 hour week.make sure they pay overtime over 40 hours.the trucks are sterlings and some old roadway volvos. i'm pretty sure they have gotten rid of the old fords they aquired when they took over DiSalvo |

| thanks for reply.....I know they pay 16.50 in Jamestown,Ny to start. I don't know how often raises are or what top pay is. Hope that they pay ot after 40 as all companies should......I have talked to some that don't however....I'm not sure why that is. This job I'm looking into in in Pennsylvania.....so hopefuly there is not messed up freight to deal with. They did say it was a driver/dock position and that you load your own truck. I hope that after that it's let's say a 4 hour drive to a terminal, drop n hook and then back and done for the day. |

| from what i gathered when i was contracted to them it that they are pretty strong back your way.we were trying to work under their west coast expansion and to this day they still are lacking out here. i do see more and more of their sets running terminal transfers out here though. the guy that owns it has a good east coast and midwest freight base from what we always heard around the terminal. out here all the contractors were contracted to CC Western which was their division out here. my truck said CENTRAL TRANSPORT on the door,operated by CC Western and then we had our own business name on also.made good money doing my route untill the insurance/motor carrier permit issue came up,they didn't want to pay and neither did the contractor who leased the truck, i was a sub lessee so i had no say so. |

| I heard that....well I guess I'll check them out on Monday and hope for the best. I'm guessing that they are similar to a Pitt Ohio or one of the same. I'm just looking for a place to settle into for the next 20 years. Thanks for the input..... |

| Good luck whiteline, I used to work for them (doing nightime linehaul) and they were a pretty crappy outfit. You may want to do a search under the 'bad company' thread, there were a lot of others posting there. Just an FYI, of course your experience (with a different terminal) could be different. Odds are if you are running during the day, then you may be doing P&D, as opposed to running terminal to terminal. Also, if you have your doubles, you may want to look at running turnpike doubles/triples, I hear that pays well and of course, is mostly a drop n hook affair. |

| wallbanger......I'll look into that....I was under the impression that they might be similar to Pitt Ohio. Kind of a self made guess. This position that they have is for a driver/dock position where you load the truck at the beginning of the day. From there I'm not sure exactly what happens. I do know that it is dedicated routes, and home daily, 10-11 hours a day. If I don't take this job, I will go back to hauling steel where I have made about 34-40 a year......not much coin for the amount of total work that is put into the job......only good thing there is home on weekends. | No problem, I know when I was running linehaul, I was getting paid 38cpm (with only 1 year exp), but because I was doing a round to Indy and back (from Detroit, around 560-600 miles round trip) I was making $700/week. My biggest problem was unpaid waiting, it would turn my shift into a 15-16 hour nightmare. But, like I said, everyone's experience is different. And 34-40 for hauling steel doesn't sound all that great. I have only ever pulled vans and reefers, so I have no first hand experience of flatbedding, but I have heard (from other drivers) and seen how much work it can be. |

| from what I have heard, they pay by the hour down here in Pa at Central....I'm curious if they pay waiting time or maybe I go off the clock when I wait. That wouldn't be good. A guy out of Jamestown, NY said he was putting in 10-11 hrs a day and that they started him out at 16.50 an hour. It must vary from place to place I guess.... |

| I live in Jamestown NY. I actually was driving a mixer at Ler down the street from there last year. I did not talk to them when I decided it was time to hit the road again though. I have never seen allot of activity around the Jamestown location, but it is small. Good luck and let me know what you find. My wife seems to want me home more. I have thought about talking to Path trucking in Fredonia, but what I hear about them is hit or miss. |
