What Are Recruiters Looking For?

I applied at four companies, all but one turned me down. I thought I was a solid applicant.
1. No tickets or accidents in 30 years
2. No criminal record
3. Retired Military
4. Solid financial background

I was planning on paying for my own training at a respected local school. The only thing I can think of is the companies want to train you and get you in a contract they hope you will break. I am really amazed I got no responce to the online applications.

Why not do your training first then apply when you're almost finished and see if any want you? Are there any companies that work hand in hand with the schools like they do here?

That is probably what I will do. Gonna start training next month. I was hoping to have something lined up before I started training.

Freight

It may have a little bit to do with the time of year. Right now freight is a little slow. In a couple of months your response will be totally different. And you are right, you do seem like the kind of candidate that most companies would want. Go to school and then watch them beat on your door!

most if not all schools devote some class time to recruiters coming in and giving you a quick pitch.

Everyone gets a job out of driving school. maybe not with the company they want. It costs the company more for insurance to hire newbies, so many do not. This said many do !!!

no fellonies or dui's, reasonable record, you're in like flynn...

with your record.... and a certificate... you're doubly wanted... pick your company of the 50 or so majors who will take "no experience" drivers.

and welcome to truck driving, it ain't rocket science...

Two reasons come to mind off hand.

1. Recruiting areas, If you place an app with a company that has one and you live outside of it. Well its pretty much said done and over with right there.

2. That you dont actully have a CDL yet. Think of it this way would you hire someone to work on your home who.. Was taking the test to get his contractors Lic and hasent bought any tools yet?

Another way to think about it would be the "Date of Hire". Lets say that with company ABC you qulifiy for company medical after 30 days or they have a 60 day probation period. With them hiring you befor you have a CDL you could easily have over two months in befor you ever see the inside of a company truck.

most co.s won't even talk to you until you are in/ almost completed with school. UNLESS it is through their company sponsored school.

It is hard in you live in an area that they don't hire from.
I have my CDL took the 6000 buck school passed with flying colors. Helped the instructors teaching others to back up. No tickets No DUIs ever. no accidents ever. Had a felony dismissed when the prosecuter found out that the ones making the claim falsified records to get me. and haveing that mentioned will cause every one to say NO even though I have NO felony.

Hi Seattle,

I'm like you.. older, solid driving/financial record, and looking to start a second career. I just finished a four week school in Portland today (IITR) and have the WA state test tomorrow. Even though it's the holiday season, we had several NW companies come talk to us during the session. Watkins/Shephard, Gordon, May, Glacier, FSA/Sygma and one or two others. I have apps in w/ Gordon and Interstate, both in the Tacoma area. Our recruitment person came in today with more than 15 pages of local/regional companies that have expressed interest in and/or hired graduates of the school in the past. (IITR has a lifetime placement program for graduates, BTW) Most of the companies that talked to us have some sort of tuition reimbursement program. Pick a good school up there that has a solid reputation with hiring companies.

Good luck,
Honua Gal
