:biggrin_2552:Hello everyone. Well I did the stupidest thing ever. When I renewed my license I did not renew my airbrakes. It was my first time renewing my license and I didn't know what trouble I was getting into. Now I can't get a job, my wife left because I can't work and she can't afford to provide for us all, and the only way to get airbrakes back on is to take the road test again. I have no truck to take the road test in. I'm in a very bad spot right now. I'm unemployed, the wife and kids (my life) are gone and I feel so stupid for letting this happen. I need to get my license straight so that I can work and get my family back. Does anyone know what I can do? I live in Illinois, right outside of Chicago. I'm a great driver and the only reason I didn't renew the airbrakes is because my boss at the time told me forget it and hurry up to get back to work. He said I could do it another time and I listened to him, while screwing myself.

are you still employeed with the company that was rushing you? if you are you need to do what you can to use one of their trucks to take a road test to get your qualificaiton back, one of the safety personel should be able to carry you down to get qualified, if the company does not want to do this then you need to look for another company, there are companies that will help a driver get qualified, look back when CDL lisc came out all companies had to carry their drivers that were not grandfathered in down and do all the tests and road tests, i spent months working with the NC Lisc dept getting this done. if your company cares then they will help....dont give up.

Dang man, sorry to hear all of that. I know what you are going through though. I let about the same thing happen as well and was told the only way to get it back was to retest. In my situation it was actually the CDL that I chose not to renew (see sig below). So it is a little different for me as I have spent so much time away I have to retest all the way including written. I know in Ga they will allow you to rent a truck on site (at least at the Lakewood location) to take the road test on. If my memory serves me right (hey I'm half senile so I may be off a lil :biggrin_25523:) they were wanting around $100 to do that. Maybe they have some kind of deal set up like that in your area. What ever happens I wish you luck with everything.

Well unless you have a CDL they will not rent you a truck that has air brakes.. They will ask for your licens when you go and pick the truck up and check for your CDL (its thier but if they don't, so they are going to)

I know here in Indiana they have a few facilities that you pay a training center that are licensed to provide CDL testing, will let you use thier trucks.. You need to call a few large training centers that have trucks..

Sorry your women left, how long have you been out of work? Dunno man, if it was me in your shoes and I have not been out of work very long I would be asking myself " was she really serious, or was she there just to have sombody provide for her?" 2 people who are married should try to stick together, even threw the hard times..
I know most typical wedding vows say

" for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part"
    OR
I offer you my solemn vow to be your faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad,
    OR
I will be yours in times of plenty and in times of want, in times of sickness and in times of health, in times of joy and in times of sorrow, in times of failure and in times of triumph.

Basically they all mention something about bad times I will be there for you..
People just don't take marriage serious anymore.. It's a joke
I think you probaly be better of my man letting her go if she is going to dump you for this (unless you have not been trying for a long time) Cause she just has proven to you she is not going to be there for you threw hard times...

So, whats the deal? you can't collect unemployment? can't get local job till you get back on your feet? You should be able to get some type of income..

Well, there is not place around that you can rent a truck from cheap. There's one place that will and they charge $500. I just don't have it. My wife is a good woman. She stuck through a whole lot! And she didn't leave forever, but we have two kids and she can't afford to do it all. I have been doing stupid jobs, not trucking, and they haven't really been paying. I fell off and I need to get back on. Now I know what I've lost. I need it back.

My dad asked an Indiana DOT officer about air brakes on a straight truck and what type of licence was needed. He was under the assumption that you had to have an air brake endorsement to drive a vehicle with air brakes. The officer told my dad that the brake system didn't matter. They go by the gvwr. If you are driving a truck with a gvwr of 26001 or less all you have to have is a chauffeur license and a valid medical card.

So, just find a company that has a fleet of straight trucks. They pay just about as well as driving an 18 wheeler.

Thanks TruckerJo. That reply to this post just made me rethink thing's. Having someone support you for your decisions is hard for me to find no matter what they are to me but I know there is someone who won't let me give up on trying to drive as long as she's still breathing as she say's. I just gave up though because I am out of options. Without cash in hand I can't go to school because every company seem's to have some cost or another in there that they don't tell you about until you get into the fine print. But from what you said, I'm looking back at the drawing board and removing my extreme rant before she see's it and get's upset with me. It's amazing what that little word called love can do to a person. Love may be a little word but has a HUGE impact.

Well, I'm not expert, but I seem to remember reading that a Class B CDL is required for any vehicle with air brakes?

I do agree - at least in our company - I make the same driving a company pickup truck as I do driving the semi. Or a 10-wheeler, or a 6-wheeler - I just prefer to drive semi's.

Niteryder,Set me straight on a couple of things.Did your license expire or did you just go down to the DMV office before it expired and renew? Also,if you did not let your license expire, did you have a valid CDL showing no restrictions for operating a truck with airbrakes? So,again, did you let your license expire?or just go down to renew?I'll get back to you after you post.

If all of that fails check with Schnieder of Indy. They charge $40 an hour to train you if need to do that. But it should just be taking the air brake endorsment test.
