Howdy y'all,
I'm new to the forum and to trucking, actually im still in training at
Nu-Way traing center. I live about 5 miles N. of Detroit and about 1 mile east of I-75. Im looking for advice about which company to start with. I wanted to go with Roehl, but a recruiter told me thier not hireing in this area same thing with schneider I'm looking for something regional, possibly otr. I dont want to be out more than 2 weeks at a time, preferably 7-10 days at a time. I realize this may not be possible right away. Benifits, equipment(type of tractors and whats in them i.e. ez pass, qual-com, paperless logs etc.) safety and training are most important to me. I prefer volvo, but as long as thier newer and well maintained. I have a clean mvr and background and solid work history, atleast for 5 years back, but im only 26. I would like to drive reefers or vans, no flatbeds. Tankers would be fine too as I already have my endorsement. Please do not suggest Werner or Swift as I read here and talked to fellow students(back for refresher couses) about bad things with them. Not to nobdy is happy there, but thier I have bad vibes about both.
Any help and suggestions would be appriciated.

Nevermind, they require 1 year experience.

Might wanna try some Container outfits..Mason-Dixon comes to mind..maybe drive a O/O truck..without experience it's going to be hard....

You're going to have to get on with somebody and get your 2 years experience in then you should be able to cherry pick. I was with Gordon for a while and they weren't that bad. I talked to them last year and they seem to have a bit of a swollen ego now. They were hiring out of the Mid West but I'm not sure about Detroit. Here's their website:

They do have real good equipment (or they did in 2003) and they pay practical miles. If they would hire you I would suggest going with them. I would also suggest getting a Passport if you can. This would be an added incentive for a company that does Canada to hire you since the laws governing re entry to the U.S. will be changing eventually. Just be careful if you travel Ontario. They're dicks. Good luck.

Pretty sure I saw a thread in the news sub-forum that they extended the passport requirement to June 2009 for land travel...

They have, but it doesn't hurt to have one if you're traveling there. The company I'm with now won't hire anyone without one.
