Depends on what type of hot shot you are looking into.

There are sites for them that are more info than you will get here.

A Owner Op Story:
I have a family member who started his company back in the 90's with a hotshot rig with his own authority, no brokers, and he had a couple good local accounts with a great rate. Tough gig unless ya can keep the deadhead miles to a bare minimum( and he wanted to be home each night). He eventually merged with another company who phased the hotshots out and they went entirely big truck and OTR. The business partner ran the whole company into the ground, then bought him out a few years ago and he now runs as a solo O/O, big truck(sole proprietor, less aggravation).

Best part was the rates were good, his cost-per-mile was quite a bit lower than a big truck(obviously), but again if ya wanna sleep at home every night, it's prob not the gig for ya(unless ya can get a good paying local account in the mix), cuz your gonna run around the country for weeks at a time to make a good living, but ya will do fine if ya manage smart, not dumb.

There was a company back then called JonesMotor I think it was, and they had alot of hotshot freight back then. Try google-ing them.

Another HotShot related Story:
I know some folks that over the years went the Expedited classB route(buy a straight truck, 24ft box w/sleeper) as an alternative to HotShot, and every one of them failed miserably at that gig. They shoulda went the hotshot route, cuz they'd more than likely still be in business.

I had my own Hotshot bussiness My main customer had 8 stores selling heavy equip.I was on call 24/7 for the coel mines parts warehouse was run 24/7 it was good money most of the runs I did in a Pickup some with a gooseneck.Warehouse closed moved to diff.location still done good hauling pats and small machines. Then Rita hit after then it went downhill to many cutthroats like everything else I guess. But oilfield hotshot pays good just have to lease out.Insurance to high for one person.Plus the under table money.
