Small Dilema

Here's my situation. I am going to truck driving school in 2 weeks. The school is 6 weeks. I'll be graduating around Aug 15th. Do to a family emergency I can't go over the road until October because I need to be home on the weekend. Would it be better if I just get a job in town at Wal Mart or something until I can go on the road. Or should I try to get a local driving job where I can be home on the weekends. I could go with a OTR company but they will send me out for training and I need to be home on the weekend for the next three months. I want to go OTR in Oct. I can't switch my school date because I am already enrolled. Will driving for a local company for 2 months then quitting have a worse effect than having a 2 month gap between school and getting a driving job ?

Have you told the school that information about the weekend situation. the company that is going to hire you should be contacted before you start school to see what can be worked out . i am starting school soon,,,so please just take this as advice not from experience.

I'd double check with the school. Since you have not started classes, I'd think they'd allow you to reschedule your time.

Other than that - if you are POSITIVE you have a job OTR on Oct 1, you are probably ok. A lot of companies require re-training, or even reschooling, after a rather short time - but the shortest I recall hearing was 8 weeks

Dilema

You should tell the school and company about the situation....family emergencies are understandable....quitting a job after 2 months will look bad in the future for potential employers...would not recommend that....you would not be able to get a driving job, OTR or locally without at least 6 months of experience already under your belt...so that is a long shot....wrap up the family emergency, then begin your OTR career....just my advice....Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I've decided to delay my schooling for a few months. I contacted the school and they understood and rescheduled me for the end of Sept. I applied for a job driving a tow truck in town while I am dealing with stuff at home. Who knows, maybe I'll like it enough to stick around for a while. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to go out on the road.

congratulations, you are already on the path of becoming an over the road driver! One of the first major challenges of the job is learning to juggle at home responsibilities and appointments. This is also one of the toughest and most pain in the butt things to do in the trucking industry. Have no fear though you will become a pro at it. Good Luck on your endeavor.
