Now we have many O/O going under not to mention the carriers that have closed their doors putting many more drivers out there looking for work .

I, too, don't understand the apparent unwillingness of companies to hire experienced drivers - who have taken a leave of absence, shall we say. "Insurance" doesn't cut it here, for me.

The ONLY thing I can think of is the thought that "he quit driving once, he'll do it again, and we'll be out a driver". But that makes no sense, either, since it's well known that the vast majority of newbies (such as myself) will quite the business after less than a year.

I can't see it being an age, thing, either. Not only am I a newbie, I'm 50 - and I got hired right out of school. Not hiring somebody who already KNOWS how to drive a truck and just might need to learn a few rule changes strikes me as the height of stupidity.

As for the refresher - I've heard several currently employed drivers suggest it as a good idea. I don't know if $500 is reasonable or not - but I'd for darn sure make certain that the school/course was PTDI certified.

We had a guy in that boat in our CDL class. I think the cost was under 1000 but he sat in the class for the first week and got about 5 driving sessions. The guy already had a job. Funny thing is for some reason that job fell through. The school hooked him up with a local company that recruits there. It was a Sage school in Yadkinville NC

I have read on this forum that companies aren't looking at guys like you and me as "experienced" drivers. Yeah, I know your immediate thought, but its true. I think one reason are the changes in DOT laws, logging etc..

I recently did a road test for a local company in Lynchburg, actually backed a 53'er into a slot between two trailers at a dock on the 1st attempt with no puling up to correct myself or anything, but I was grinding gears like a bad dog. (2 pounds of burger with that please) and the reviewer said I couldn't float the gears because the company set their trucks up that way,.. in short they failed me on the driving test, and that after they paid for a complete physical, drug screen, etc.!!

So I called a driving school and they said they would spend a day with me for $500 and provide a certificate on completion. But I don't know the validity of the cedrtificate with these companies or if a one day refresher class would be enough. So it sounds like a good idea but I think the companies can pick 'n choose as they like in this economy.

Plus I'm a Geezer now (reached the 60mm) and I'm not sure I could take an OTR job with a lot of lumping or tarping, as much as I like to think I'm young, I'm not! So if you and I aren't considered experienced then to better OTR jobs with no touch frieght may not be available. Just my thoughts Len

Roy
/ from lyion. $500 for one day .man thats one of the bigest rip offs ive ever heard ,dont do that . check with your state you live in some states will put you in trucking school for very litle money and get you straight with what you need may be just a week or so but not one day . you ant going to get a job if you were asked how much time did you spend at the school they just lafe at you over some rip off deal like that .

Yes Len, there is a chance:

That's my thread where I documented what I went through to not only get a job... but I had to get my CDL back as well.

There are companies out there that will hire you without going with a trainer. However, it's probably a crapshoot to find a good one right off the bat. Somehow I managed to find a good company on the first try. I've been there since the beginning of March and I'd have to say I'm pretty happy.

Pierce only has a handful of trucks and that's probably the key—how many of you OTR drivers got a three day weekend at home for the 4th? I did...

Stick with a smaller company and you'll get better results.

So I spoke with a Schneider recruiter today, and even though they trained me back in '94 and I drove for them a while, I was advised that they aren't hiring for trainees at this time. She said I would need to find a school that would "re-certify" me, and the $500, one day trip I mentioned earlier, probably wouldn't be enough. Now I'm not sure which way to duck since the money is getting low and I don't know if I could afford much more than that $500.

I need a new plan and might need to find someone who is willing to (re)train me again. Anyone have any ideas for someone in Virginia?? Thanks!

Roy

Don't know if you read my earlier post, but I've been out of driving 10 years and she advised that I needed "recent" experience for the openings they were filling in Virginia.
