I mean, I like driving, but it's not fun the sacrifices we have to make to do it. It sure gets in the blood though. I remember the frustrations, but I can never get rid of the desire to do it again. I'm going to do all I can to still get my schooling finished; I know I would regret not doing that. But either way I'll probably end up back in the saddle, whether its in a few months or years.
I may have found a driving job at last! It's a local company in Lynchburg, the "P" test results just have to come back, they were supposed to be here this afternoon, but now probably in the morning. The company's insurance company accepted me because I have no violations and I had maintained my CDL for the past 10 years, even though I wasn't driving. In other words, no break of any kind.

Now, the company doesn't pay miles they pay a percentage of the load. I asked what drivers were making and the Ops Mgr showed me their pay on the computer,.. before taxes its not bad. They will put me on the road with another driver for a week to get familiar with driving again, which I'm in favor of,.. then I'll get to pick one of the 6 trucks available on their lot

I still have questions but from everyone I talk to in town who knows the owner, they say I couldn't be working for a better man. So for now, I'm looking forward to the "new job" and we'll see where it goes. I'll try and let ya'll know!!

Congrats Roy ! I drove for a aggragate hauling co. last year after being out of trucking for 5 years, and after I grabed the first couple of gears, it was like I never got out of a truck. I was surpprised how natural it felt....

Okay, yesterday was a "trip".. I went to the office to see if the results had come in, they hadn't so while we were waiting the Safety Dir said we were going on the road test, so I climbed into the International Eagle w/ Cummins engine and Super 10 tranny. He told me it was a staright 10,, hell, I've never seen a Super 10, so off I tried to go. Absolutely could not find the gears at all after starting So I'm thinkin here's goes the job.

When we got back he was telling the Ops Manager how I did and he said, it's a Super 10! So a nearby driver said I'll go out and show him how to shift it, which he did and I'm set for my 1st load tomorrow, 147 miles total for which I'll make .91 a mile. They said they would start me with short runs, to prove myself no doubt, which I don't mind. It lats me get acclimated to the truck again. But you are right, except for the shifting it was all pretty natural pulling the trailer down the road, hooking etc.

WAY TO GO !! I had a '95 Volvo with the Super 10, I loved that "lazy man's" transmission ! They are a lot different then a straight 10... Keep us in informed, and have fun out there !

The Super 10 is a whole different animal. Unlike a staight 10 or 13 you don't go through the gears, flip the button and do it again. You start out with the button in the low position but instead of grabbing the next gear you flip the button to high , let off the throttle and the tranny shifts. When you're ready to "move the stick" you flip the button back to low and move the stick to the next gear. You're only moving the gear shift 4 times (unless you start out in low) so it's really a lazy mans transmission... The first time I drove one I loved it, it was an older International coe. it was at the Eaton Road Ranger training center in Marshall Mi.,The company I drove for sent the drivers there for the defensive driving course (it was a lot of fun!) . As luck would have it the next company truck I got had the Super 10 ....
