With the area you live in, look at McElroy. Wasn't for me, but I ran out of a different terminal. The Pleasant Hill, NC guys seem to have more work than Cuba, AL (home terminal), or the South Pittsburg, TN guys. Bonus to you, red trucks.

McElroy

Thanks for the tip. I am "processing" with them right now. I have read lots of bad stuff about them though. (probably just like every other company) Am told you tarp EVERYTHING and get no tarping pay. Well, I can't be too picky though. We'll see what happens.

I would check out Barr Nunn if you can. I talked to a driver who said they like everything they have to offer. Plus their HQ is located near you, Charlotte. Good luck on McEloy.

You do tarp 99% of loads, with the exception of roofing shingles, of which you might tarp 20% of those. Just picky customers there. Your "tarp pay" is .01 CPM "extra". Square ended loads, which is most of your wood bundles and sheetrock, are 1/2 hour to 1 hour tarp time when you get in the routine. Most people wind up taking longer cause they Bull-S with other drivers. Some LOWES loads are one tarp only, a few no tarp. LOWES loads always took the longest, LOTSA different product to get around. Also, when they say "pre-tarped", pre-draped over is what they mean. You bungee. A sheetrock plant in Carrollton, KY does it ALL. LOVED going there. Love Kentucky anyways. Great easy driving. When I was at McE freight was slower than it is now, but since McE hauls majority of housing products, thay rise/fall with the housing market. Steel is on the rise tho. Hated coils from Columbus,MS. Took WAAAAAAAY too long to get loaded, then had to meet these CRAPPY appt times. Also, no coil bags. Tarping a coil with those huge black/red lumber tarps BLOWS, literally. The blue/yellow tarps were better, I took one of those and cut @10' of length off it, was easier. Kept that one strapped to my truck.

Quit them in late January due to lack of freight in my area. Orientation is quite thorough, my class "graduated" with 1/2 of what started. They weed you out for various reasons. Bad driving skills, poor reading/writing/map routing, health, etc... Whatever they think will impair you will get you the boot. Ding the truck on the skills yard, Uh-oh. GET OUT AND LOOK. If you gotta G.O.A.L. 10 times is better than bumping something. Also, maintain 3 points of contact when entering/exiting the truck. Don't jump off the trailer. It's possible to make it all the way to the DAY of getting keys to your truck and they send you packing. BTW, 2 weeks of orientation, then 4 weeks of trainer, then final week at Cuba,Al home terminal for finals. Better have $$$ in bank for these 7 weeks, pay is only $300/week when I was there. Keep in mind, most if not ALL companies are like this so choose wisely.

OSBORN TRANSPORTATION in rainbow city alabama is looking for dry box drivers, many dedicated runs hauling auto parts for honda hyundai and kia. I have been there for 5 yrs. Equipment is not the best but getting better, Thats the only real downside I have found. Start up to 37cpm I believe.
No training though, 2 yrs experience required.

companies

Thanks to all. I am still searching. I started pt with a tour bus company yesterday. Very different than what I had planned, but less pressure, better hours and lots of TIPS. We'll see what happens. At least right now I do not have to worry about the orientation bs.
