    Well, I hadn't planned on doing it this soon, but my regular job has gone way. :biggrin_2555: I'm a 49 y.o. retired Police Officer with a squeaky clean record and drug screen, and driving record. Both of the last 2 jobs I had exceeded 12 years each. I just payed my tuition at trucking school, passed my DOT Physical and Drug Screen and here I sit. School starts Monday and already the school people are pushing me towards Werner and CR England. My preference is leaning toward KLLM or Roehl, and it's mostly from reading and chating with you guys and drivers at Truck Stops.

    Question is: If you had to make a list of 5 or 6 companies that YOU would work for right out of the box, who would they be? NOW PLEASE, no recruiters, no "I just got hired 2 days ago at orientation and they're great". I need to know from people who have been there or are currently working there NOW.
    You see, I had planned on taking the plunge about 6 to 8 months from now, when I had more debts paid off, but that changed quickly. So I'm calling on my friends here for HELP:biggrin_2551:!!!! I've read just about every post on the site about good/ bad companies, but I have to start filling out pre-apps in the next day or two and don't have too much time for further investigation. I'm pretty easy to work with and learn quickly. I SHOULD have my CDL, Haz-Mat, Tanker and Possibly doubles very soon. I don't want to yank a skateboard. Flatbed is not for me. I also live in the Louisiana area, so that might make a difference. HELP!!!

    Well you know from reading my posts that my hubby and I are very happy with his experience with KLLM, and he is working for them in part because of this forum and all the positive posts here about them.

    Figure out what is most important to you and that should direct you. Hometime, benefits, rider and pet policies, and pay are some things to consider.

    For what its worth, when I toured the CDL school I am going to go to, every other word out of her mouth was....blah...blah....Werner....blah....Werner.... LOL

    All companies have there goods and bads, and it also depends on who you talk to. Do your research and find out what company best suits you. Also remember you are new and you do have to put in your time.Atleast one year. Then make your decision about what company you think is better to further your career. Most starter companies are pretty comparable.

    Interesting question. GOOD entry level companies are hard to find. I guess if I were in your shoes I would look at the following carriers in no particular order. UPS, UPS Freight, Fed Ex, Old Dominion, R+L Carriers, ABF, Yellow, Roadway, New Penn, Epes, Estes, Crete.

    Not sure if every one of these carriers take students but I am sure some of them do. The OTR mega carriers Swift, Schneider, JB Hunt, Werner, etc. are geared for high trunover and therefore do not care much about new recruits in general. They know there will be another class of students next week coming in. For about every 10 drivers hired only 3 or 4 will stick it out for a year and maybe 1 will stay for several years.

    I can tell you that if I could do things over from the start I would focus on the union carriers. Pay and benefits is what you want to look at the most.
