I live in Phx. and have been looking. The union jobs are laying off... UPS I have been told (by UPS drivers) will be a waste of time this year and in the future, many of the larger companies have stopped hiring unless you have 1 or more years experience (Schneider, etc... have stopped hiring newbies)... there is an over abundance of drivers here and very few jobs. There are some local jobs but again, they want min. 2 years exp. or if no exp., the pay sucks ($10 to $12 an hour). Did find one local job, 16' and 24' straight trucks, $14/hr. ... not for me. Good luck. I wouldn't move here. I am hoping to leave. You wanna buy a house?

There's plenty of local companies in Phoenix, the question is, are any of them hiring, and if so, does the fact that you are just out of school disqualify you? All kinds of LTL companies are operating here - Saia; Conway; Overnight - UPS - te list is rather lolng, actually. Construction is probably pretty much dead. I think Fry's, Basha's and Safeway are all union - but I've never tried to get into one of those positions. There's all kinds of local flatbed operations hauling everything from lumber products to pipe to cementer spanners for new buildings - on and on. There are probably job here to find, the problem is finding a place with openings that will accept you.
Good luck.

Well, I have looked and called everywhere and everyone. Any local jobs are taken immediately if good, as there are alot of out of work truckers here. Union jobs are toast... lots of union guys out of work. UPS is toast... driver for them told me they have a 5+ year waiting list for FT drivers, mainly warehouse guys waiting to move up. They only hire form within here do to so many looking... the few local jobs remaining still require 2+ years due to insurance... The only OTR companies I found hiring from here are Swift and Crete. All others are full, and /or taking only experienced drivers, 1 year requirement usually.

I am moving to the east coast possibly in the next several weeks in order to get a driving job, though I am going to talk to Crete again... tossup among Crete, Roehl and possibly TMC at this point... though Schneider may possibly be hiring back east as well...

Smiley 5 Yard goat hostler is another option

When looking for an hourly paid, local driving job, besides bobtail trucks, another option is driving yard goats to move trailers around. Here's a pict of a yard goat, in case you don't know what that is. Another option is driving sand-n-gravel trucks, or driving a trash truck, or cement mixer. In light of the current economic situation, I would not be too picky if I were you. If the economy sinks into a depression this means less freight in the OTR area of trucking, as people across the country will cut back on consumer spending. Even if it pays little, just concentrate on building up your verifiable driving experience. You can supplement your pay by getting a 2nd job on the weekends. With the possibility of an economic depression, a low-paying job is better than being unemployed, or being an OTR driver, sitting idle at a truck stop while waiting for your next load, because there are less freight available with consumers cutting back on spending nationwide.

Another option would be to check the OTR companies for dedicated stuff between PhX and South Cal. You won't be home every night but 2 out of 3 or so.

Well, I drive down the freeways here and see ALL kinds of local companies - companies that unless you happened to see the name on the side of a truck, you probably have never heard of before. I don't know, seems kind of iffy on moving somewhere and then trying to find a job. Ruan seems to have plenty of trucks running around hauling aggregates, Waste Management (can apply for them online) is supposed to be a great company to work for; there are several, huge lumber yards that have fleets of trucks in various areas around the valley; Kalil is hard work but they seem to have ads out frequently - probably don't pay much though; the cement industry seems to have a LOT of trucks running all the time - and there are sand and gravel operations along with the cement fleets all OVER the place around here. Heritage trucking (near Red Mountain Freeway and Country Club); Sunbelt; Reload - a company that hauls ductile iron pipe from it's yard to locations all over the state as well as a lumber operation near 51st avenue and Camelback. I'm seriously doubting that you have called every company, there are plain too many of them around here. I am not claiming they all or any of them are hiring, but there are options available, I do believe.

Waste Management is a great company to work for. My cousin worked for them while I worked for a competitor down the street. Our pay was very different. I am sure they pay the same no matter what location. Basically I got paid a base pay + mileage at my company. Waste Management paid him a much smaller base pay + stops but still averaged out to be close to whatever I made. I would say he could safely average 15+ per hour on the slowest day. I also know their benefits are very very nice. So all in all a good company. Wouldnt hurt to check out their website. Browsing through I saw a job in Flagstaff so Im sure they have other locations there in AZ.
