I need to get my CDL, but don't have a few thousand dollars lying around to attend an independent school. So, I'm looking at signing up with a company that would pay for my training.

So far, I've looked at Swift, Schneider, Stevens, Central Refrigerated, Prime, Werner and Roehl.

Stevens and Central offer schooling with no money down, their schools are in Texas and Georgia though.

Did anyone else get their CDL through a company? Can you guys point me in the direction of a good one, or let me know what I should look out for?

    Thanks

Just a suggestion JimBad, but the first step might be contacting these carriers just to find out if they are accepting students from your area. I ran into "not accepting students from your area" several times.

Actually I'm going through Central Refridgerated. It sounds like they have a pretty good program. They finance school and housing and everything up front, and you pay them back over your first year. After 1 year, you've paid back $1,200 and they call it even.

It pays $450/wk during training, and $0.28/mile once you get out on your own. School itself is only 2 weeks.

I contacted another place that offers training and they declined me because you had to be 24 to enter their program and I'm only 23! :biggrin_2556:

Getting the first year under your belt will open a lot of doors. Keep your head down, your ears open, your mouth shut, and learn all you can. No matter what route you go, the first couple years are tough. Keep a clean record and deliver on time and you can go anywhere.
