wow now I'm even more confused since I read somewhere else that you must hold a CDL permit in the state you reside.. I have no choice but to go to phoenix since the schools are divided by the states so depending on where you live decides which school you attend. That kind of makes me nervous that you have to learn another states CDL test..

No you need your CDL and/or permit from the state you reside regardless of where you go to school. I would ask the Swift recruiter just to be sure what you would need to do or call Colorado's MVD. The following is taken from the AZCDL manual:

I'll have to speak with the recruiter.. the only problem with that is, from what others have said, recruiters don't know much either. Even on my recruiters page, there is conflicting information.. not with swift company but dealing with states laws.. why can't everyone be on one page?

    Welcome to swift.. lol..

Wanting east coast is not a problem at all. Ive been solo almost 2 months and ive been east 98% of the time, all but one run out to Cali to pickup @ budweiser n haul out to texas..

Good luck in the academy. study and stay in the range trucks as much as you can, cause them range skills are pass fail, or rollback with a cost.

Most of them should be the same as the CDL is a federal license. Some states may have some things that are stricter than Federal Regs, but they can't be less. I don't think you'll find too many differences from state to state.

I am in day 4 of the Phoenix Acadamy and willing to answer any questions you may have. I read on here about Howard being cool, he is ok but not by any means the coolest..

Well, there are a couple people in the current class from Colorado and although this info is late you do NEED to get an AZ CDL permit in AZ. Don't waste money on getting your other state permit as AZ will just take it. If you are from AZ you will need to get your permit before coming to academy and you get 3 tries to pass all. General knowledge is 50 questions, air brakes is 25 questions, and combinations is 30 questions I believe. If you are out of state, you will be allowed to take the permit with your classmates from out of state together at the DMV. You will use the motel's address as your address for your license, weird but true. Then upon graduation you can just exchange the AZ license for your state's CDL and not have to test (unless you get different endorsements or from California, who will require you to take the written test again).

And Howard is a great instructor. He is firm, but fair. Overall, all the instructors at Swift Phoenix seem to be very good at their job and they prepare you to not only pass your CDL exam, but do very well on it.

The steps I did after first contacting the recruiter took about 2 weeks. If you have no more than 2 moving violations in the last 5 years, no dui's, no criminal activity, no drugs etc. First your recruiter will pull the last 5 or 10 (can't remember) years of driving record for each state you held a license. You will then be asked to complete the online tests and videos. Then, you will get your DOT physical ($40 @ Swift clinic), and get your cdl permit from DMV (if in AZ already -$25). Those were the steps. Good luck with your application!
