I am in the process of getting my CDL Class A license without going to school. I took the Michigan tests and passed them. And for the skills test I have a buddy that lets me use his truck on the weekends to prepare for the skills tests and he also showed me quite few things on driving.
I guess what I am wondering is, will getting my cdl without going through a school hurt me for getting a job with a company? It sounds like most companies want drivers that go through some sort of school. Some day in the future I wouldn't mind driving otr.

For insurance purposed most places are going to ask how long you were otr.... It is tough to get a local job without that experience.

I am sure there are some OTR companies that may consider you for training, however many want school time, and the better choices want 260 hours of training. 160 hours seems to be the min.. All you can do is start researching and see.

Once I obtained my CDL, I had absolutely no trouble getting a local position. Since I got my CDL without going through a school, I have found It rather difficult finding a decent OTR company that will hire me. BOL

I am starting to see that it will be hard to get a otr job with a good company because I decided to get my cdl on my own without going to a school. And I suppose the longer I wait the worse it will get also.

To get on with a decent company you just about have to be a Recent Grad or have recent OTR. Insurance companies require it.

What he said. I've had my CDL since '77. 22 years experience. BUT........ I haven't driven since '99. I have given up trying to find a job. I just enrolled at Tech school to be retrained so I can get a job. If you can get ANY A driving job; go for it.
